Title: Ada Bedford .American federal census lookup, please
Post by: hobbyhorse on Wednesday 19 August 09 23:32 BST (UK)
Hello
I am trying to find out the details, particularly the Name and birthplace of Ada's father. I have found an entry on Ancestry, but the relevant details are locked!
She was born in 1885 in Manchester, Lancashire, england ( maiden Name Leather ). She is found under Ada Bedford (possibly B/ Bell Bedford). Husband Frank B Bedford. 2 children in the 1910 federal census Florrie and Phyllis.
I would be grateful for the details, if anyone would be so kind as to look, please. The name and birthplace of parents would be fantastic!
thanks

There is a Florie Bedford born 1907 in Methuen, Massachusetts.   http://www.sec.state.ma.us/arc/arcsrch/VitalRecordsSearchContents.html

The Methuen, Mass. city directories from 1904-1905 and 1907 have a carpenter named Fred B. Bedford living there.

They appear to be in Canada for the 1916 Census.

Thanks for the very quick replies. This puts a spanner in the works for me!!!
It says that Ada emmigrated in 1900...... I have Ada in 1901 census, in England, living in Northwich. Are there any details relating to the names/birthplace of Ada's parents in the census. I have never seen an American census document, but it implies on Ancestry that parents details are given.
kind regards

Those are all the details.  The birth place information omly goes as far as what state or foreign country the person was born in.

People did not always accurately report their year of immigration.

There is a Miss Edith Leather, born about 1884, who arrived in Boston on 15 Oct 1901 on the Saxonia, destination Lawrence, Massachusetts.   She was going to a cousin, Mrs. Leversedge, 27 Essex St., in Lawrence.  Lawrence is near Methuen.

Could this be Ada?

I think you may be onto something there, Erato.

1902-1903 Lawrence, Mass. city directory
Leather, Ada, table girl at 73 Essex

1904-1905 Lawrence, Mass. city directory
Leather, Ada, domestic at 127 Haverhill

In the 1906 Lawrence directory, no one named Ada Leather.

On the Mass. marriage index:
Leather, Ada, married in Methuen in 1905  Vol. 554 Pg. 559
Bedford, Fred Ball, married in Methuen in 1905  Vol. 554 Pg. 559

I'm not sure what's on marriage records from that time, but it may well have her father's name.  Maybe someone more familiar with Massachusetts would know.

Thankyou very much for the information. The mention of a boarding house is correct.... this must be Ada. I wonder why she is down as Edith, not Ada on the Saxonia ship records? This is a brilliant find.
Would anyone know anything about the immigration process.... would there be any surviving documents, regarding her family?
How would I go about looking for an American marriage certificate? I have never seen one before.....would they have similar details to our own.
Thanks ever so much for the information.
kind regards

What's on the marriage record would vary by state.  I'm not aware of any comprehensive site with Massachusetts marriage certificates from that time frame, so you would likely need to order the certificate.  Information on ordering from Massachusetts archives here:  http://www.sec.state.ma.us/arc/arcres/residx.htm

Thankyou for the weblink. I will see if I can order the marriage certificate.
I would also like to get the marriage certificate of her cousin, the boarding house keeper. The surname changes, from Liveridge to Leversedge. Not sure which one is correct?

Here are snippets from the passenger list and the 1900 census so you can make your own guess about the surname of Ada’s cousin.

And here are the same people in 1910 and 1920.  Liversedge?  It can't be a very common name.  Can you find John in England in 1881?

Dear Erato
Thanks for the images of the surname. It's hard to read what the name is, as it could be Liveridge or Liversidge. I have looked and there are people in England which all these names. Ada states that her cousin is mrs Liveridge, so I am assuming that she is from Manchester, Northwich or Liverpool and her maiden name is Leather or Foster, as a cousin of Ada.
John married Sarah in I am assuming Massachusetts, so he could have come anywhere in England. I will contact the weblink, that you kindly gave me and hopefully they may have a certificate.
kind regards

The Lawrence city directories have John with a few different spellings of his last name - 1888 has Liversage, 1894 & 1898-1900 has Liversedge, and thereafter it seems to be Liversidge.

There's a marriage for a John Liversidge in Lawrence from 1894 on the index I mentioned above.  The only Sarah on the same page has the surname Edgerton.

I found a tree on Ancestry that I think might have your Leather connection - it lists Sarah Egerton born Northwich, England, married to John Liversidge, and died 1928 in Lawrence, Mass.   Her parents are listed as Charles Egerton & Elizabeth Leather.  Elizabeth was born 1842 in Hertsford, Chesire and died 25 Dec. 1937 in Northwich Chesire.

 Hello Shellyesq
Thankyou for the information. The marriage of John Liversidge and Sarah Egerton is a brilliant find and is the correct connection. Ada's cousin is an Egerton..... I assumed that it would be Leather of Foster, but in the 1901 census Ada is staying with Charles and Elizabeth Egerton, in Northwich. She is markes, as niece. Elizabeth Egerton is Ada's aunt. I will now look on previous census documents for a Sarah Egerton. Thankyou ever so much, this has proved the correct family connection.
I will also look at the family tree on Ancestry.
Thanks again, for taking the trouble to look.
kind regards
