my problem is, apart from charles lake, who is my grandad, i can find no records of this family. no marriage, death or birth records. my aunt has helped me a lot with my tree and as john lake is her grandfather i would love to be able to tell her something about him. word is that john commited suicide. he does,nt appear in 1911 so we assume sometime in between census records. she would love to know if indeed this is true. fingers crossed for any info you can give on the family. janes maiden name was either nichols or nicholson.
thankyou all
best wishes

Hi all :)
The birth found by Elizabeth seems to match this christening:
John Lake, 20 Sep 1842, St Botolph Bishopsgate, London
Father John, mother Elizabeth
This looks like the John/Elizabeth family in 1851:
1851
HO107/1542 636 8
St Matthew Bethnal Green, Middlesex
5 New Street
John Lake, head, 34, Cordwainer, b. Hampstead
Elizabeth, wife, 33, Shoe Binder, b. Bethnal Green
Elizabeth, dau, 14, Shoe Binder, b. Bethnal Green
Mary Ann, dau, 11, Shoe Binder, b. Bishopsgate
John, son, 7, Home, b. St Lukes
Robert, son, 4, b. Bethnal Green
Jane, dau, 6 mo, b. do.
Bridget Hamilton, lodger, wid, 27, Shoe Binder, b. St James Westminter
(Makes one wonder whether the first boy died)

thanks for all the replies everyone, according to the census john was born in paddington, and he lived in east end after his marriage and died there as he is buried in tower hamlets cemetary. so not sure if the john/elizabeth family is correct. or maybe paddington is,nt where he was born ? aaggghh so confusing lol
-
thats a brilliant find Tati but its hard to tell if its them becuase of the reasons Sophie gave earlier however maybe Sophie should work on this family to see if she can rule them out or in further.
-
hi, i had found this family before tati and toni, but dismissed them solely on the fact that he was,nt down as being born in paddington!! i assumed the census is always correct on such things but may be not?? :-\
-
Census information is very far from being always accurate - which of course doesn't at all mean the John/Elizabeth couple are the ones we're looking for!
I think you really need the birth cert for one of the children to find out Jane's maiden name, and from there (hopefully) identify the John Lake/Jane marriage and get the cert to find out what John says about his father
:)

thanks tati will do that. hopefully the mystery will be solved!
