Post by: Lizzielogs on Tuesday 18 August 09 17:28 BST (UK)
I have no idea if there will be an answer to this but my Grandfather is buried in Waitakere Cemetery as follows

from the fact it was a soldiers burial might that indicate he served in the NZ army in WW2 (he went to New Zealand sometime in the 20's, 30's), and if he did could I look for records anywhere please?

Hi Lizzie
There was a monumental inscription, did the cemetery give that?
The burialrecords/undertaker would have to have the service details/number in order to have him buried in RSA area
Any thing from archives?

War records can be requested
http://www.nzdf.mil.nz/downloads/pdf/pers/pers-archives-enq.pdf
If you get the cemetery details first it will make filling out the form easier

Bye

Hi Althea

This was a copy/ paste from the cemetery archives, I can only find a general council email address and not a specific email address for the cemetery itself,
I have sent a general enquiry but have had no reply as yet, I wait on!

Hi Lizzie

My Scottish grandfather, who also came to NZ in the 30's is  buried in a soldiers grave at Waikumete, but his service was WW1 with the Black Watch Reg of the British Army. In other words your grandfather might not have served in the NZ Army during WW2 but the British forces during WW1. In 1914 he would have been 27ish and old enough to serve but in 1939 and in his 50's he might have been to old. Just a thought.

Thanks Alan,  I really din't think of that, I have had a reply to one of my emails to say that this department
NZDF Archives Enquiries
For Chief of Defence Force

NZDF Archives Enquiries
Trentham Military Camp
Private Bag 905
Upper Hutt 5140
New Zealand

will give me his war records foc, I have to fill in the form, however I will look into him having served in WW1, he married my Gran in A/ M/ J 1916 and my Dad was born March 1917, seems the timing is a bit strange.

Yes I have asked how much it is to have a copy of the probate and the two properties he seems to have bought, I am just waiting for the replies now and will update the post when I have more info!

The best resource online I have found for military records is through the Auckland War Memorial. (I don't know how to post URLs, but just google it.) Go to Cenotaph databases.

Hi elfield   :)

The search for this military record, has since, taken a rather bizarre turn (and yes, .... the Auckland Cenotaph database played a big part in revealing some very important information ... so for sure, it is a great resource.)    ;)

Have a look here, to see what transpired.    :D

It still confusing for me (contradictory informations)

In the past when records were with NZDF you can order for free one record a year. Now it seems you have to pay $25 for each record you order (according to the letter I received today from the Nat Archives (copy below)
