Hello
I was wondering if anyone could have a look and see if there is anything regarding a John Morris, born 8/6/1889 in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire. He is my wifes Grandfather and we know nothing of his family or history except that he is supposed to come from Irish stock. The only document we have has "Extract of entry register of Births No. 666 of John Morris for the district of Coatbridge".
I know this is a bit of a long shot, but any help would be really appreciated
Kind Regards
Chris Ridley

Hi Chris
Just double checking, does the extract you have for John's birth show his parents' names?

Hi Monica
No Unfortunately that's all there is, It was written as part of a list of contents that came with some papers that recieved from John's Wife's estate many years ago. I know it's not much to go on...

There are at least two John born in Coatbridge showing in 1891 :-\
Peter Morris 40, general lab., b. Ireland
Margaret Morris 36, b. Ireland
John Morris 1, b. Coatbridge
Biddy Morris 11, b. Coatbridge
James Fragner 42, boarder b. Ireland
Address: 182 Buchanna St, Coatbridge
And this family - all born Coatbridge unless shown:
James Morris 30, railway lab., b. Ireland
Alice Morris (Dolan) 33
James Morris 13
Margt Morris 11
Mary Morris 8
Bridget Morris 6
John Morris 1
Catherine Dolan 57, mother in law
John Murray, 27 boarder b. Ireland
Address: 82 Buchanan St, Coatbridge
Not much to chose between both families at this stage. A couple of suggestions. You could look for a birth in 1889 in Coatbridge on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. There are only two showing on SP which are likely to be the ones for the two boys above.
If the date of birth you have for John's birth is correct, then you can verify which is his birth and parents this way. You can also check for a marriage for John to your wife's grandmother (if they married in Scotland) on line at SP. This will include full details on both their parents, including mothers' maiden names, which will help you verify John's details and find the correct family and birth for John.

Thank you so very much Monica
This is absolutely brilliant. And as my wife's mother's name was Alice and her uncle was James, it makes me lean toward the James Morris family, but I will take your advice and try and confirm by using SP.
John is the last member of our joint family that hasn't been researched because we had so little to go on. But thanks to you we now have a starting point and a direction.
Kind Regards

Hopefully the marriage cert will let you verify parents and then work back :) If the family headed up by James and Alice are the correct one, this looks like them in 1901. The transcript I am looking at does not have marital status so I don't know if Alice shows as married or widowed apart from showing as head of household - everyone born in Coatbridge:
Alice Morris 43
James Morris 23, coal miner
Mary Morris 18
Bridget Morris 16
John Morris 11
Patrick Morris 9
Ellen Marris 6
Alice Marris 4
Lizzie Marris 1
Peter Conn 66, boarder, coal miner
Address: 82 Buchanan St, Coatbridge

Chris, given similar names and address in 1891, just keep in mind that Peter and James may perhaps be brothers....and also, if you are doing searches that Peter and Patrick are interchangeable.
This looks like James and Alice in 1881:
James Morris 30, railway lab.
Alice Dolan Morris 23
James Morris 3
Margaret Morris 1
Patrick Morris 1 Month
Catherine Dolan 20, visitor (this may be mother with the age mistranscribed)
John Deignan 53, lodger b. Ireland
James Lawlor 40, lodger b. Ireland
Address: Buchanan St, Coatbridge
In 1881, there are a number of Morris men b. Ireland living with wives in Buchannan Street (Francis b. 1847, wife Elizabeth/ Edward b. 1851, wife Margaret/ Neil, b. 1858 with wife Margaret)....something for the future once you have confirmed John's line ;D
