Hi Everyone,
      David Sproat is one of my brick walls and its driving me crazy i have his baptism at irthington cumberland in 1868 and have him on the 1871/81/91 census and then he just vanishes off the face of the earth (it feels) any ideas would be great  ??? ???

Have you got the ref for his last sighting, in 1891? I cant see him (only David Sproat bn Cumberland I can see is younger).

Is he married/single? Parents names? wifes name? siblings names? etc    (unless clear on the census when found!!)

   he living at waterhead lanercost brampton cumberland in 1891 hes a servant, single ,aged 24 born irthington,

phew - found it now

RG12 4281 13 2 (for anyone else looking) indexed Shroat, and pob indexed Arthington.

Now off to investigate what happened to him! ....

..... but with no immediate result!

Like you I cant see him in 1901 (other Sproats around in the area, presumablty related) nor can I see a death or marriage.
That leaves either gross mistranscription, missed off census,  or emigration as the main answers!
Maybe someone can check the outgoing passenger lists on FindMyPast for you if you dont have your own access.
Incoming lists on Anc have a David Sproat arriving from New York in 1911, no age for him though. Who knows, maybe he left n came back for a visit?
