Hi,
I wonder whether anyone can help me establish where Joanna Down was born, this entry just says England. I am hoping it's Devon or better still Buckfastleigh. If so then she is in my family tree, christened Joan Stentiford 1818 d/o John and Dorothy.
Again if I am right then she and Richard Down a St Helier man, married Dec Q 1849 in Torrington district Devon. They must have returned to Jersey by 1854 when their daughter was born, or perhaps earlier. I cannot find Richard on the 1841 Jersey census - he would have been 24 - I wonder, given his skill at wrangling, whether he was a soldier when he and Joan met in Devon?

The 1861 census says Devon, and there's a mother in law Elizabeth Burrow (age 77, also born Devon)

Thanks for your help. Burrow isn't a name I recognise - my Buckfastleigh Joanna still a bit of a mystery - looks like this Joanna may have been born Winkleigh Devon.. living Winkleigh in 1851....her maiden name was either Stentiford or Ford. According to FreeBMD two Joanna's married in Torrington Dec Q 1849........

The Joanna DOWN in Jersey 1861, is also there in 1851 with her husband Richard.
Their eldest son is 5, born abt 1846 in St Helier, Jersey.
I have found a tree on A***try which says: Richard DOWN of Winkleigh, married Joanna FORD, b 1825 Winkleigh, dau of William FORD and Joanna. The FORD family, incl. dau Joanna age 15 are in Winkleigh in 1841

On the Jersey Heritage Trust Website there are baptisms for the three children mentioned on the 1881 census.

Artelus Down (Archelaus) born 27/5/1856 Baptised 11/6/1856
Ann Down born 7/1/1858 Baptised 27/1/1858
All with parents Richard Down and Joanna Burrow, fathers occupation Livery Stable Keeper
There are also five other children with the same parents
Thomas Down born 14/1/1852 Baptised 25/1/1852
Henry Down born 9/11/1845 Baptised 7/12/1845
Richard Francis Down born 20/1/1848 Baptised 6/2/1848
John Down born 1/11/1849 Baptised 21/11/1849

The mothers maiden name would tie in with the 1861 census that Tati found with a mother in law Elizabeth Burrow.
The references for the baptisms which were all at St Helier Church (Town Church)
G/C/03/A2/14 for years between 1841 - 1848
G/C/03/A2/15 for years between 1848 - 1855
G/C/03/A2/16 for years between 1855 - 1862

Yes, it looks like this is different Joanna altogether.
The two Joanna's I mentioned who married 1849:
Joanna Ford of Winkleigh b 1825 to William and Joanna FORD, married Richard DOWN (apparently of Winkleigh Devon.)
The other Joanna who married William SAUNDERS She was Stentiford but born Coldridge Devon abt 1820; neither of them mine.
