At Christmas last year I bought my grandfather's WW1 war records.
Just wanted to let everyone know that today I looked him up on the Archway site again, and his war records were right there in PDF on the internet for FREE!!
Just one mouse click had the whole lot in front of me AND it was way more than what I was sent in the post.
I couldn't believe it ;D
Needed to tell everyone. Looks like there are only a few but maybe over time more will be added.
If this is already general knowledge then oops.. I havent been doing any research for ages >:( too busy.

They talked about this in latest NZSG MAg
That so far 2000 files have been digitised
They said they get 30-40 requests a day backlog 8wks
once they get a request they digitise them to pdf dowloadable file, and only send paper copies if requested.
$25 per file written reference charge. I thought that still meant we needed to pay, so this is interesting news.
I can't find any names to check if anyone can download them once you have paid???

If you want someone to try it out on then my grandfather was William Ihaka.. he should show right at the top if you type in both names.
My grandfather's file wasn't the only one that had a PDF link, so I think its for anyone to look at.
Let me know how you get on.
Its a shame they are only digitising ones that have had interest shown in them because the costs would be prohibitive to some people who would love nothing better than to order them, but just cant justify it.
But I still thinks its great to have them out there for everyone to enjoy.

I have only found one with a PDF link :D..... guess it is better than nothing, so will wait patiently for them to appear and will keep checking Archives.

Thanks for sharing that Tracey ;D ;)
now we know what the link and files will look like.
They have an enormous task, but things are really moving getting these and the other shipping files digitised

TraceyNZ,
This Archway file sounds most interesting. I am not familiar with it. How do I access it?
Thanks, Toby.

The search site is
http://archway.archives.govt.nz/
If you enter the words Digitised Record in the search box, you will get the entries that have PDFs attached.
At the end of the results, you will also get a few pages of links to photographs, which I didn't know that Archway had. They are mainly general shots of life and work in NZ, perhaps used for publicity purposes.
Interesting!

Didn't realise this thread was here, so posted a new one a couple of days ago on this subject, after accidentally finding a file for my great uncle.

I had not requested great uncle's file, which means someone else has? Anyway, I was easily able to access it.
Very interesting, though. The other two great uncles were not accessible, so I presume noone has requested them.
Heaps of information - I now know what he looked like - among other things.

Thats good news Elfield and a bonus a photo.
Keep checking back and you should find the other guncles in the near future

Hi All,
Just wondering, as I downloaded the pdf file for my Gran's first cousin (KIA France WW1), but I had not previously sought a paper copy from that site, does that mean that someone else sought and paid for that paper copy and so his records were digitised? If so, does that mean someone else is/was researching this family - Oh I do hope so, I have so much to share with that person! The surname? KEEFFE .... and to quote my late Gran, that's with a double "e" and a double "f" and another "e" for good measure!
Cheers, JM

Yes I have found my great uncle William Anderson on this site and downloaded (free) his file and discovered that some of my guesses as to his wife and children were correct - even found the birthdates of his children. Discovered he had been wounded in France and was invalided out of the arm as unfit to continue - he died of influenza at the Tory Street Temporary Hospital in November 1918.
I have some photos of him taken at the Brockenhurst Hospital UK which are remarkably similar to some of the images in the recently published book "Images of War"
The number of names seems limited - could not find any of my other ancestors who served in WW1 - but will keep looking.

I recently wrote asking for 6 Records and was asked for $25! EACH! I couldn't understand why JOHN & WILLIAM BOYLE were digitised and not ALEXANDER BOYLE, assuming that they were being done in alphabetical order.
I replied (rather crossly) that Australia had theirs online FREE and that hard copies had been available FREE from Defence to NZ citizens at the rate of one per annum for years. I copied it to relevant ministers and members of Parliament!
INSTANT RESPONSE by phone.
IF you call into Wgtn Nat Archives and enter what you require, using a Readers Card, directly onto their computer you can order 5 records free, using the Reference Numbers from the site. Currently takes about 6 weeks and you are advised by email when they are online.
Apparently if you write from from out of town or overseas the charge applies!
Incidentally some men from WW1 (including my 2 grandfathers) are not listed on the site, although I know they both served in WW1.
In both cases, it seems, they applied to serve again in WW2. One was rejected on medical grounds but the other served guarding prisoners at Featherston Camp . Technically it appears that means their service is thus among the WW2 records and I will need to write to Defence first to get the release to WW1 before I can gain access for digitisation.
Hope that helps anyone else who knows their ancestor probably served but is not currently showing on the list.
Cheers

Only after someone has been through exactly the same process as that which operates at Archives NZ
ie the first person to request a file will have to pay (or request it in person)...

In the past, few year ago, when they still with NZDF and were not all transfered at National Archives they were free to access ... (one free per year) .. i''ve got 2 free

Hi Gwenn
You can still get them digitised free but either YOU have to go to Wgtn Archives or get someone to do it for you.
If you apply from out of town the charges apply. I am unsure whether you can apply at say Auckland, Christchurch or Dunedin - perhaps a local can advise!
I ordered 5 at Wgtn.

Although they all use "Repoman" for ordering, they are separate systems.
ie. you have to register as a new user at each office, so you can only order Wellington files at Wellington, etc..

Thanks Bren. I have only used Wellington.
