Post by: s.wincott on Thursday 13 August 09 21:33 BST (UK)
rogers/wincotts in ironbridge/madeley/telford

Hi i am just starting out on my family tree.I am interested in the rogers of ironbridge especially the family of an albert rogers of the 1900's but also an edward rogers of the 1800's who supposedly walked drunkardly into the river severn and died but there is no death etc for him.i am also wanting to trace a joseph e rogers born 1930 who disappeared.

i am also interested in wincotts, esp ones from birmingham in the 1920's and then moved to ironbridge/madeley.i am particulary interested in an alfred j wincott born 1915 in aston warwickshire, who also disappeared.

i look forward to hearing from anyone even if its only a little information...thank you

miss wincott

Hi Miss Wincott,

in the older section of the cemetery at Broseley (one of the cemeteries for Ironbridge) there is a metal grave marker with this inscription:

"In Loving Memory of
EDWARD ROGERS
Died August 7th 1933
Aged 64 years
Gone but not forgotten"

maybe this is one of your relatives, I'll attach a photo of the grave marker.

Although the date looks like 1938 on the marker, it is 1933 (I enlarged it a lot) and I think this is the reference
Rogers Edward  Age 64 Madeley 6a  574.

You can look at the 1881 census for free http://www.findmypast.com/CensusChooseSearchType.jsp
you need to register to use that.  It might be of use if you know more names of the family to look for.

hth,

Lisa   :)

wow lisa,

thank you so much,i was only up broseley the other day looking for graves in the cemetery as i know i have a couple of relatives in there but no joy...supposedly they had no markers/stones and so i have contacted the parish council for their plots...do you know which cemetery this was in?was it the one in the church grounds (the church of england?) or further down the road?

are you in the rogers family?

i don't think this is the edward i am looking for as i believe he died in the 1800's but i could be wrong (as i am just getting started on my tree) ,i am sure this rogers is probably related tho so this is of a great help!

i look forward to your reply, thanks

Hi Sam,

this is the cemetery in Broseley, but not attached to the church, you turn out of Broseley towards Ironbridge and it's on the left.  It's late Victorian, with a nice wall round it, you can see the church from there and you can go through to the newer cemetery which is between this old one and the church.

I don't know the plot number, but it was in the central part behind the small building, towards the path at the back, it's small because it is a metal marker, but on the other hand, there aren't many of those, so it is different to the other graves around.

No I'm not a Rogers family member, but I visited Broseley cemetery in June and took some photos.

I thought at first the date was 1938, but it is 1933 (when really enlarged) - I just edited my first post.

Do you know about http://www.freebmd.org.uk/
that's a great resource for 1800's bmd's (after 1837),

nice to talk to you,

Lisa

Samantha,

I think you tried to contact me about Rogers in Ironbridge (following a local query of mine about the Thomas Rogers on the War Memorial, if you'll recall).

Sorry I could not pursue our correspondence at the time - are you still researching the Rogers family in Ironbridge?

Thanks,
Tom Rogers.

Hi S Wincott
I have cousins who's surname is Wincott they live /lived in Madeley  I remember my Grandmother saying about  a family member walking home drunk and fell into the river  and died, Albert rings a bell.
My Grandmother  said that my great great (not sure how many greats) Grandfather came over the border (of Wales) looking for work, he got a job working on the Ironbridge.         (iron bridge was built over the River Severn at Coalbrookdale in 1779.)
Joseph Edward Rogers  born 1930  had a  twin Elsie she  died years ago  she was  a wonderful woman. Joseph was from a very large family.   Joseph moved  Wales and  and  got married  had 5 children,  they split up in the sixties he moved away
I would be interested in any information you learn about the Rogers family as we may be family.  good luck
