Can anyone advise me on how to search for records of ancestors in Crete, Greece.
My great-grandfather Joseph Cavaliero was born in Crete c1857 and came to the UK sometime before 1881 when he married my great-grandmother, Marie Henriette Sugneaux. His father is believed to be Daniel Cavaliero, son of Victor Cavaliero who died in Crete c1857, but there is no definitive proof of this.
I am aware of a family tree on Tribal Pages, it has been very informative, but it has raised more questions than answers.
Any ideas?

I used to live there but don't speak Greek. Contact someone in the capital, Heraklion, to ask for help. Start with the History Museum and don't worry about writing in English...they'll figure it out:

Hi Rosie C
I am also interested in the surname Cavaliero. Did any of your Cavaliero family live in Bedfordshire or Cambridgeshire during the 1950's?
I look forward to a favourable reply.
Thank you for taking the time to read my request.

Hello,
I have just seen your note written in 2009 (today is 28/04/2014) and yesterday i have found some
people whose name was Cavaliero (or Cavalierou or Cavalieron) on the french Website ANOM in the country of Algeria. These people were jewish living in Algeria but coming from Candie (old name of Heraklion). Go to this website http://anom.archivesnationales.culture.gouv.fr, and maybe you will found a part of what you are searching.
Good luck.
