Could anyone tell me which would be the nearest colliery to Row Beck, Dearham ,Cockermouth.
My great grandad worked as an Underground coal shift man in 1911, He lived at Row Beck and was Married to Margaret nee McDowell ( 1887, Cockermouth).
I have been told that miners usually lived within walking distance of the colliery.

You could start here

Thanks. I have looked at that site , it names a few collieries close together in that area.
I think i need to be writing a few letter for more specific information. It`s a shame my family are not better historians !!!!!!!!!! :-[

at that time there would only be two pits still working in dearham, the birkby coal mine(Dearham drifts) closed 1950. and the scheme pit which later became a cooperative. Just because your relative lived in dearham does not mean he worked in Dearham. my own grandfather lived in dearham as did all the family, but he used to walk to Clifton pit each day, at least 5 miles as the crow flies from dearham. Probably why there are so many footpaths across the fields.

There was also Flimby pit too which is about the same distance to Clifton give or take afew metres.

Try this link to the Durham mining Museum ...it lists all the mines in the Cumberland area.

How did Ggd die? Dmm lists all casualties and deaths for all the pits in W. cumberland. My own Ggf blew himself up by lighting a candle in Dearham around that time. Ggm ended up sorting coal on the pithead to keep family together. bob

He died naturally.
I have used the Durham site, my dad`s uncle died at Lord`s Quarry ,Elterwater.I sent them a transcript of his inquest and they included him on the memorium page.
