My gt grandfather was Robert William Holmes born 27/12/1902 in Mickley. I know that he married Elizabeth Arrowsmith, but I have no more information on him.
I am unable to find any information about him or his family. I would expect to find his family in/around Mickley in the 1901 census but haven't really found anything.
Is this name familiar to anyone? I have found one record on ancestry (although I am unable to look at it as I don't have a subscription at the minute) and it is for Robert William Holmes born Mar 1903 in Gateshead, Co Durham. Could this be my Robert or is Mickley too far from Gateshead?
Any help would be gratefully received.
Thanks
Helen

Hi Helen
There is a really useful list of registration districts on
www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg
According to this Mickley would have registered in Hexham.
How do you know Robert's date & place of birth? Are you sure that the information is accurate?
If it's any help I've found the marriage registration
Robert W Holmes & Elizabeth Arrowsmith

Added - if he was born at the end of December 1902, then it's quite possible that the birth was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1903. This sometimes gets shown as Mar 1903.

I've just had a look at the 1911 census indexes (which are free) and there are
2 Robert Holmes aged 8 living in Gateshead and one in Newcastle. There are also a lot of other Holmes in both areas.

Hi Linda
Thanks for the information. My gran gave me his date and place of birth although she doesn't really know much more.
It just seems strange to be registered in Gateshead if they lived in Mickley. All I can think is that he was born in Gateshead and then moved to Mickley which could explain the confusion.

This is quite likely. With all due respect to your Gran, she may not have known where he was born, just that (perhaps when he was quite young) he lived in Mickley. Are/were there other family members there? Did she just assume that's where he was born?
His marriage certificate should give you the name of his father. If you decide to get this, please double-check the reference I gave above (wouldn't want you getting the wrong one :-\) You can do this free on
www.freebmd.org.uk
Then perhaps you could check the families in 1911 (easier if he had siblings and you know their names).
The 1911 census www.1911census.co.uk is a pay as you go site, so needn't cost a fortune. If you haven't already used it, have a look at this thread
www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,398597
(there are others on RootsChat as well) as there are lots of things you can do for free to increase the chances of getting the right family.
Hope some of this helps
Linda :D :D

I think I will speak to my Gran again before spending money, I am hoping that her sister may have more info or certificates as they must be somewhere.
That is the information I had about the marriage, but again it was just found on Ancestry so not 100% certain.
Thanks

Just a bit of georgraphic background....to help or maybe hinder !
Although generally speaking the River Tyne was the main north/south border between the traditional counties of Northumberland (NMB) and Durham, a blob of NMB lay/lies on the southern side of the Tyne, which includes Mickley,Prudhoe, etc.
The Stanley Burn defined the east/west border between NMB and Co Durham. Mickley is about 2-3 miles away on the west (NMB) side. On the east (Co Durham)side of the Burn are places such as Crawcrook, Greenside, Chopwell etc.
Mickley, as Linda has already pointed out, lay within the wide Hexham Registration District. Crawcrook etc lay within the Gateshead Registration District.
So a birth in Mickley would have to have been registered With Hexham Reg Dist, but a birth just a couple of miles east of Mickley would have to have been registered with the Gateshead Reg District..... ??
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Parents were allowed 42 days grace in which to register their child. If they moved home, maybe into another Reg Dist, before they had registered their child, they would have had to register in the correct (i.e. birth) Reg District.
( I have an instance in my tree where the parents of a Blyth-born child moved to Sunderland before registering the child with Tynemouth Reg Dist. They then "registered" at Sunderland, the "wrong" Reg Dist. But Sunderland informed Tynemouth, who put the records straight ! )
~~~~~~~~-------
Maybe a garden-path direction, but the birth of a Robert William was registered in Jan Qtr 1903, with Hexham reg Dist, but surname was Ferguson ?
