Title: Fallon, Galway
Post by: D.Maciver on Wednesday 12 August 09 19:12 BST (UK)
I am trying to trace info for my gg grandfather who was born in Galway about 1841 to 1845 (exact location unknown).  He appears in 1867 in St Helens, Lancashire married to Bridget.  His fathers name was Patrick and his place of birth is given as Galway, Ireland.  Not a great deal of info I know but any help would be appreciated.

Hello again Dee,I notice on the  IFHS--site (Irish family history society, they charge 5euro to view)there are only 3 James Fallon's for dates between 1837--1845 coming up ,2 of them are Galway West & one Galway East & only one of them have a father named Patrick thats the one listed for Galway East---the place is coming up as Oranmore + had a look at Griffith's Valuation & there are Patrick Fallon's listed for Polkeen & Ballintemple both townlands are in Oranmore, hope this may give you some kind of lead Good luck in your research --Nipy

Hi Nipy
Blimey I am so excited its taken me 5 years to find out what part of Ireland my ancestors came from .  All english census showed his birthplace as Ireland and its only with the release of 1911 census that it now shows birthplace as Galway, Ireland.  I only found this on Monday this week and am amazed that someone has helped me in such a short time, I can't thank you enough and I will definately be paying to view the info you have given me. Thank you so much.
Dee

My great grandfather was James Fallon who came to England before 1841 I think he came to Northwich in Cheshire and married Ellen Commons who was also irish in Northwich.  I believe James was born early 1820s.

My gt grandad was a James Fallon b 1854 his brother Patrick was born in 1866, don't know where they came from in Ireland, but their dad was a James Fallon; and Ellen Ryder who James Fallon b 1854 married was born in Craughwell, Galway. They all later lived and died in Ditton, Widnes, I have James and Ellen's marriage lines and it states his dad was James. I would love to know what his wife's name was and where they came from.

Hi there Pauline

When did James Fallon who was born in 1854 die ?

Is he on the 1911 census as this one is quite good with counties in Ireland ?

James was born after civile registration but his brother Patrick was born after so if we can narrow down what county they came from it would be a start as Fallon is quite a common Irish name.

Hi Tara,  Thanks for getting back on this one.  James had died in 1910 Patrick in 1909, so just missed the 1911 census. On previous census dates Patrick is born bet 1856 to 1859 etc., but I was looking at his gravestone today and he died 25/5/ 1909 and it said 43 yrs so that would go back to 1866 I think. There are loads of Fallon's in Ireland aren't there, not too many in England. Thanks for the idea of Civil Registration, I've just had a look and in 1866 the following : Downpatrick, Sligo, Athlone, Drowmore West, Longford, Stokestown. Lots of others a few years apart. In the Irish Baptisms there was a Patrick Fallon 19/5/1866 Galway West, with father James and mother Bridget? A few years ago I got a baptism copy from  Irish Roots for James Fallon baptised 29/6/1854 at Kilashee, Co Longford, parents James  Fallon and Judith Egan, sponsors Patrick Fallon and Ann Egan, but couldn't find match with Patrick, one in Kilashee  year 1866 but different parents.  Thanks very much for your help :)

Hi Pauline

I'm afraid with no definite county, a wide range of dates, plus a fairly common surname you are dealing with the proverbial 'needle in a haystack'.

I will be honest and say 'keep your purse closed' LOL 'til you get a better lead.

Fingers crossed and Good Luck

Tara

:)Thanks for your honesty Tara,I'm of the same mind, I think I would probably have to buy loads of records with no gaurantee of a match, I did that for Anthony Gaughan from Mayo on  my gran's side and didn't get the right match, another popular name in Mayo.  Will let you know if I do find them. Thanks again Pauline Adamson (nee Fallon)
