Title: Windows XP updates
Post by: Calverley Lad on Tuesday 11 August 09 22:36 BST (UK)
For all those running XP, don't be alarmed on large number of updates.
I just counted 10 (ten) including an update for service pack 3 (SP3).

Should I be alarmed if I do not get 10 updates?

I shall probably be a bit jealous if I get less than 10 updates. :)

What I forgot to mention that all were security updates.
(One discounted as removal tool for rogue software.)

Hi Guys,
It seems ages since I had any Microsoft updates, can anyone explain (in simple terms) how I can check my XP system to ensure everything is in order to ensure I've got the latest updates.
Many Thanks

using ie, do a google search for microsoft updates

or

windowsupdate.microsoft.com

To use this site, you must be running Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or later.
They won't play nice with other web browsers :o

If you go to Start,  Control Panel, you will see Automatic Updates which enables you set your preferences. If you open  Add or Remove Programs, and tick the box Show Updates you can see when and what updates have been installed.

I just received a bumper crop of 11 updates.

I got kb972691 Outlook 2007 Junk Mail Filter as well, hence the extra update.

So presumably I can expect these soon, possibly when I finish today?

Possibly.

Providing you have not been bad-mouthing Microsoft then they should be arriving soon.  :)

Santa Claus and Christmas spring to mind.

I got 13 updates last night when I went to turn off the computer. This morning turned it on as usual and then noticed I had one lonely white arrow on a soft black colour background- perhaps a coincidence but similar has happened before after some MS updates.

Nothing yet!!

We are a two computer household  :o  :o

My computer (upstairs) received 11 updates last night.
My husband's computer (downstairs) as yet has received none.
We have noticed that we never receive updates on the same day.

Update: Iput this computer on standby while I had a snack, there are updates waiting for me to instal apparently. I also have a netbook running XP, there is no apparent relationship between updates for it and my main computer.

I got 7 more when I closed down last night so now have had 10 in total.  Wonder what 1 is missing?

I had another one this morning: Update for Windows kb968389.

Yesterday's were:

Security update kb973869
Security update kb890830 Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool (August 2009)
Update for Windows kb973815
Security update kb971657
Security Update for Windows Media Player kb973540
Security update kb973507
Security update kb960859
Security update kb971557
Security update kb956744
Security update kb973354

Incidentally, MRT (Windows Malicious Removal Tool) does not show up in Add/Remove Programs - Updates, so you will only see 9 updates listed.

I have 11 Updates...
From downsides list I have kb958470 instead of kb956744.
Not sure why the difference.

I got 9 of those on downside's list of 10.

Like Mariac I got Kb958470 instead of Kb956744.

So I got 10 in total.

Till now I've never bothered with updates - my machine has performed without problems since setting up a "dual boot" some months ago.

Last night I turned on the automated service, and MS downloaded 44 updates for me.

I wonder if it will make any difference? ??? :)

Having just had a look at the article below it would appear kb956744 (SP2) and Kb958470 (SP3) are pretty much the same thing but it depends which OS version you have as to which file you receive via automatic updates.  I do have Windows XP SP3 installed but if you look at the 4th item it seems you could get either one.

Hi

They arrived and installed themselves yesterday (13 Aug 2009).  I would not have known except that in the middle of doing something an unexpected little window opened and said that Windows was going to restart the computer in three minutes if I did not cancel.  I did cancel because I wanted to finish what I was doing and then I restarted.

All the best

And to think my original post was meant to be a 'heads up' notification.
But all good things must come to an end.
Support for XP is soon to end.

11, for main machine, 13 for netbook plus further supply waiting download onto netbook. Had more updates since support was terminated (allegedly) than ever before.

Yes, your computer will be more secure.  You probably won't notice that it is, but then, most don't notice when it isn't - until their credit card is cloned.

That's because we are in the midst of a world-wide recession, and online fraud is on the increase as a result.

I thought that Suppot for XP was running until 2014.
I did not have the updates although on automatic and downloaded them manually.  This has not happened before.

Support and updates are two separate issues, but updates are being supplied until 08-April-2014:-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_XP

Scroll down to support lifecycle.

True, but how many people actually contact Microsoft Support ?  Many are ineligible anyway, because they have OEM editions of Windows.
