Isaac SARJEANT was born c1823 in Rangeworthy, Gloucestershire, 3rd son of William SARJEANT and Sarah WILLIAMS The surname is not always spelt that way so I have found. William died between 1833 and 1841 probably in Machen, Monmouth, as that is where the family was in 1841, and 1851. By 1861 Isaac was in New Zealand and stayed there for the rest of his life.
Trying to find his baptism/birth date as well as for the rest of his siblings. Have found most of them in the census so do not need any census info.
Those I have are
Emma Williams SARJEANT baptised 2 Jan 1811 aged 2 at Yate, Gloucestershire - can't find any other record of her
Louisa SARJEANT bapt 9 Jan 1811 at Yate, Gloucester - m1 John PRUJEAN 1842, m2 William LIBERT 1854 - can't find her death
Edward SARJEANT born c1814 Yate, Gloucestershire
Thomas SARJEANT born c 1821 Rangeworthy, Gloucestershire
Isaac SARJEANT born c1823 Rangeworthy, Gloucestershire - was in NZ by 1861
Henry SARJEANT born 19 Nov 1829 Rangeworthy, Gloucestershire - also came to NZ by 1861
Elizabeth SARJEANT bapt 3 Mar 1833, Machen, Monmouth.
It is possible there were others with the gap between Isaac and Henry.
According to 1851 Sarah the mother was born in Bitton c1787.

Thanks Trish. Yes I did have the census info, but not the death. That probably is her as most of the other bdm registrations seem to be in that district.

The information you want is available on the GFHS CD of baptisms 1813 to 1837.
You can find details at the GFHS site using Google.

Have not looked up the census yet, but if Joseph was a painter and lithographer they arrived in Melbourne, Australia in 1857, Mr, Mrs and three Misses.

EDIT, Did you notice on 1841 Wales census with Sarah and children, that on same page is a James Sargeant aged 45 and wife Margaret. James is not born in county. Possible brother of William?

Found the Arestis is Melbourne.
See here - http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,398651.0.html
Henry arrived in Melbourne June 1859 and placed an advert in the Argus newspaper late June and early July looking for his sister Mrs J Aresti.
Sadly the three daughters all died in 1860 in Melbourne, and Emma also there in 1865. Joseph returned to London in 1866. Can't find him in 1871 as yet, but found a death for a Joseph ARESTE in 1878 aged 70, which seems to fit.

Thank you for that info Ian.
How incredibly sad :'(
They must have all died from some disease I would think to be so close together.

Hi.
Interesting stuff. Isaac Sarjeant is my great great gradfather. His son was Edgar Munroe Sarjeant and his son Archibald Sarjeant and his son Kevin Sarjeant, my father.
Your right, Isaac emigratted to New Zealand and became a farmer, his wife died young, age 34.
I was actually looking for some info on William Sarjeant, Isacc's father! I saw that he was taken in by the overseerers of the poor when he was 10 years old, that was all I could find. And that his mother was called Susannah Sarjeant - she had no husband by the looks of things.

Welcome to Rootschat.
I would be interested to see the info about William, to pass on to a grand-daughter of Henry Lyall SARJEANT, Archibald's brother.
If you are interested in the McGREGOR and FRASER lines from Isaac's wifes side, please get in touch. Can help you there.
After you have posted three messages or replies you can send a Personal Message with your email address.

I'm really not sure if this is the William Sarjeant we are referring to but here goes..
I saw the info in the national archives online. Its not alot though.
Anglican parish of St James the Great, Westerleigh
Overseers of the Poor
Removal Orders to Westerleigh.
Level Item
RefNo P.W/OP/4/48
Title William Sarjeant, 10,bastard of Susannah Sarjeant, from Castle Precincts.
Date 1787 Nov 17
AccessStatus Open
The area fits - Westerleigh being in the Bristol area. This puts his birthdate as being 1777. Would have been between 56 - 64 when he died according to your info?
Interestingly there is a Sarah Williams also in the removal order to Westerleigh.
Possibly a coincidence...
Can't find much on a Susannah Sarjeant however, I have seen two Susannah Sarjeant's. One born in Suffolk in 1743, which would make her 34 at the time of Williams birth, and the other born in 1741 in Sussex but both are the other side of the UK.
What is confusing though if this is him is the possible brother he had in Wales that you mention? Sorry if I've gone down the wrong track here, looks like your more a pro than me at this. I'll do that third post so you can email direct.

While searching for my great grandfather Patrick Byrne I came across a survey map showing the Early settlers of Wanganui in New Zealand. Isaac Sarjeant was my great grandfathers neighbour in Delair which is close to Fordell a small village close to Wanganui. The map dates about 1850. I have this scanned this map and can email to anyone interested.
