Title: Zotom?
Post by: hanspan on Monday 10 August 09 18:31 BST (UK)
i don't believe this says Zotom... but i could b wrong as it's been transcribed as Zotom.

7th person down!
below John Benton and above Robert Benton.

Best i got was Geo Tom - but that seems odd as no one else is double named!!
many thanks in advance!

In the previous census he is George W(illia)m (RG12/3888) which seems to match this one.

Image looks like GeoWm which could be shortened version of George William.

Hi
Yes I agree with George as the Geo (See the Ger in Gertrude below)and O with a long finishing tail that crosses the upright line to give a impression of a T. (See his small T's as not same) W looks like ( The first up line in the W is cross with the tail finishing line of O)  + Uu'n+ to of small

Geo"""Uu'm""<  O tail line crossing W or 'Uu'

It would be 'Geo Tom' Two capitals if Tom

Yes, I agree that it is Geo. Not that I am disagreeing with previous census, but I cannot see how the second half relates to William, no matter how I look at it. I also so it as Tom.

If you look further down at Schedule 72 there is a Thomas Hack.  The T in this is completely different from the letter in question.  Given all the other responses I would accept  Geo Wm  if he was mine  :D

Thomas is usually abbreviated to Thos, rather than Tom.  The names of my grandfather George Thomas always appeared as Geo Thos in census records.

I agree with Geo Wm with a rather long stroke between the two abbreviations.  Admittedly that stroke somewhat obliterates the W.  Maybe the enumerator was going to write George in full, but had to change this to include the second name.

Hi All

Look at Lottee below in in the list! O to TT there are two distinked different linking line 'O' to'T'and 'T' cross stroke.
Also Beatuce and other T's are a lot more straight horzontal cross strokes. Letter linking lines are more upward angles
