hopefully someone out there can help me.
I have an old photo of a gentleman who i believe is my uncle's father (my uncle by marriage to my dads sister )
on the back of the photo is an address 187 Droop Street, the word Sweep. the name of J.C.Gray 512 Harrow Road Paddington W. which is I believe is the photographer.
i have looked on the 1911 census for both address and the names Powell and Grey are not at those addresses.
I was wondering if someone could look at the electoral rolls for the area. around the years 1911 and 1923(1923 was the year my uncle was born )
opps sorry the name of my uncles father i believe is Charles Powell
unfortunately i don't really have a lot of information on uncles family andI cant ask him as he is now very ill.
He has said that he had two brothers and a sister all died when they were young by either drowning or electrocuted i think the sister died of the flu this all happened in the 1920's i don't even know the names of the brothers and sister. and still looking
they lived i think in the mile end area of london
thank you lots if you can help

Hi
It is worth reading the British Library guide on electoral registers
http://www.bl.uk/reshelp/findhelprestype/offpubs/electreg/electoralregisters.pdf
'Since 1918 the principal division of parliamentary registers has been the Polling District. The arrangement within polling districts is normally by street in alphabetical order within which properties are in street order. ... Without an address or at least a fairly precise locality for the where-abouts of the person sought, it is generally best to use alternative directories arranged by name.'

At http://www.historicaldirectories.org/, there is a James Whybrow, chimney sweep, at that address in 1911, 1916, 1918, 1919.
In 1901, 1904 and 1908 there was a John Pickering, also a chimney sweep, there.
now at freebmd.rootsweb.com there is a marriage in 1911, possibly of Charles A. Powell to Helena M. Whybrow, in Paddington
And children to them:
Alfred J C, 1912 (appears to have died in 1928 aged 16, in Eton district)
Helena G, 1913 (died the same year)
and another son b. in 1924 (your uncle? or a younger brother of his?)
So the photo may be of James Whybrow, your uncle's grandfather, rather than his father; or it may be of some other relative of the family.

Thank you Velda and Jorose.
I found my uncle Tony birth on freebmd 1923 which say his mothers surname was Burnham. my mum seems to think her first name could have been Thelma, she also says that everyone called her aunty Thelma and she had a sister called Babe not sure what that would be short for or if it was just a nick name.
i am going to have to get my uncles birth to make sure of his mothers name his family. if i can get to 1911 it will make things a bit easier
oh well never mind this is the fun off it all
thank you again :)
