I have a 4xgreat grandmother Mary Currie. When she married my 4xgr grandfather, William Playle, she was a widow, Mary Ross. Her parents were Hugh Currie and Margaret Boyle and she was born in Glasgow Scotland. In the 1850's her brother and his family joined her in Australia. They all lived in the Inverell district. I have know idea how she got to Australia or if she was a convict or not. Not sure if she married her first husband in Scotland or Australia. She may have come to Australia as Mary Ross. Any help with finding how she came to be in Australia would be greatly appreciated. I don't think she swam ;D
Cheers

Hello there

when was MAry born? What was her first husband first name?
There are a number of Mary Ross arrival into NSW but need a bit more to go on

Hi Jenn
I think her first husband was William Ross but I don't know if they married in Scotland or Australia or if he even came to Australia. She did have a daughter to him, Margaret Ross, born about 1848 but once again I don't know if she was born in Australia. Mary's second husband, William Playle, died in 1869 and Mary must have remarried because she was burried as Mary King in Warialda Cemetery. On her marriage certificate she is 28 in 1856 and on her death certificate she is 51 in 1881. Both state she was born in Glasgow. I hope this helps.
Cheers

Hmm, I find a marriage in Warialda in 1874 for George William King and Mary "Hayle"; could be a mistranscription of Playle?
Can't find anything about her first marriage, or the birth of Margaret.
-
Looks like her brother John Currie arrived with his family on the Peter Maxwell 10th Jan 1858. Relative in the Colony was Brother in law Mr W Phyle Hunter River district.
Lets us know if you don't have this allready and will post full details.

Hi All
Thanks so much for this, I have been trying for years to find this information when all I needed to do was ask. Any more info you could post would be great but you have already answered so may questions. Do you know what date she married George William King and when he died. Did she have children with him?
Cheers
Eupham :)

You can search the online BDM's
they do not include a date only a year.

I guess you would have details for the daughter Rebecca Newman who is buried in her grave as well?
Jenn

Hi Jenn,
Yes, I have the details of most of the children she had with William playle.
-
There is a mention of the Will and claimants for the estate of William Playle on the National Library's digitsed newspapers site.
http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/correction/3424139
Nothing new probably if you have the children's details already.

Hi Eupham,
I have not been able to find anything on William ROSS - no sign of a marriage, no sign of a birth for Margaret and no death for William.
I wondered about the young couple who watched out for her on the ship as we often find it is a brother or brother in law who has taken responsibility for an unwed girl. I couldn't find anything further on them, no births, deaths etc but I did find just 2 months later in both the Vic and NSW Government Gazettes.
Water Police Office 15 Apr 1842
Notice is hereby given that the usual licences of departures were this day granted to the following persons viz: Walter ANDERSON to proceed in the barge SARAH BOTSFORD, bound to Sincapore, and Colonel SLOANE K S F to proceed in the barge LOUISA, bound to Guam, agreeable to the 10th section of the Act of Council 4 Victoria, No 17
H H BROWNE J.P (Superintendent of Water Police)
I note it is the same ship Mary and the Andersons arrived on.
On board the ship with Mary - no parental details were listed for them.
Walter was 19 a native of Lanark (Blacksmith) Discharged to Barracks)
Margaret his wife 18 a native of Haddington (House Servant)
Re Playle I note a report re daughter Rebecca - the victim of a rape in 1873.
NSW Police Gazette 15 Oct 1873
Apprehensions
Richard RUSSELL charged on warrant with committing a rape on the person of Rebecca PLAYLE has been arrested by the Queensland Police. Remanded to Warialda. Committed for trial at Tamworth Circuit Court and discharged.
Cheers Kris :)

Hi Kris
Rebecca would have only been 13 when she was raped. Her father died 4 years earlier and the girls spent a lot of their childhood on large cattle stations.

Hi Euphem,
I have a little info on Mary Currie. She was a bounty girl and a Mrs Grant of Parramatta chose her at 18 pounds a year with rations. I have husband 1 as Andrew Ross. Most likely married him in Australia around 1846 as Margaret was born 25th Jan 1847 and baptised at St Phillips Church Sydney 13 March 1847.Margaret died 18th March 1925 at The Home Of Peace Hospital Marrickville Sydney.Husband no 2 was William Playle my ancestor who she married 1st July 1856 at Yambercollie. I have four children for them,Mary Jane ( my ancestor ), Rebecca Catherine, Amelia Ann and Rachel. Husband no 3 was George William King who she married in 1874. Mary died 2nd Feb 1881 at 3 Geddes St Warialda NSW. Her brother John was born 7 Feb 1824 in Lanark Shire Scotland. He died 19th May 1909 in Inverell. I have a birth date for Mary as 1824 also but in Catton Glasgow Scotland. This information comes from research by my late mother in law.Hope this helps.

Hi Bob,
Thanks so much for that. You have given me a lot of info to add to my tree. One question though, what is a bounty girl? Does this mean she was not the Mary Currie that came out on the SARAH BOTSFORD?
Cheers
Eupham :)

Hi Eupham, A bounty girl were girls sent out by the government as servents. Potential employers met the ship and picked out who they wanted. She did arrive on the Sarah Botsford 15th Feb 1842. She sailed from Greenock 12th Oct 1841. In case you don't have it William Playle's parents were Joseph Playle ( Plail ) and Rebecca Saville married 2nd June 1820 Parish of Halstead County of Essex England. Joseph was born 9th Dec 1788 at St Marys Bocking England. Joseph's father was also Joseph and his mother Ann Turner. The Warialda Historic Society book states that William Playle went to the Blue Coat School in England and came as a free settler. This is not true. He was convicted 23rd May 1837 for stealing a quantity of coins from his grandfather Thomas Saville. He was sentenced to 7 years and arrived Sydney Cove on the Bengal Merchant.
He served 4 years at Moreton Bay and was granted his ticket of leave dated 12th Dec 1842. William buried all his papers so that his history was hidden. There is also a family story that he came from the line of Lord Saville. This also is untrue.I have more on his descendants so if you let me know your line I may have info you don't have.

Hi Euphem,

Greetings Bob,
Your posting to Euphem, helped clear up the relationship question I had on Amelia Ann. Thank you for that information. Another hypothesis I had on William was that he was the same individual that arrived on the Bengal Merchant in 1838. Another detail confirmed with your post.
There are a few Playle individuals that I am wondering if you can shed any light on .
The first is re: Samuel Playle, an ind. also sentenced to seven years (is that a standard length for certain crimes?), he was shipped off on theee 29th , July 1837 on the Susan. Arriving at Van Diemen's land. Do you know of any details on Samuel and who his parents and or siblings may be? The same question for Joseph Playle (Plail).
I know Amelia Ann married Edwin Shepard Doherty in 1887.
My research shows two different marriage years on BDM indexes for her parents, Mary Ross and William Playle. One for 1859 and the other 1856. I am thinking the year 1856 to correct for this couple, can you confirm that? I believe the aforementioned ladies had a brother William; who was born in 1872 and died in 1872. Source from the NSW BDM; do you have knowledge of him?
Thank you in advance for assistance that you may be able to provide and to the other posters who shared helpful details on this subject.
This is my first posting to Roots Chat, please excuse any misstep I may have committed.

Hi Genmom711,
Edwin Shepherd Doherty married Amelia Ann Playle 28th Dec 1887 at St Simon's and St Judes R C Church in Warialda' I have nine children for them. If you don't have them let me know.William Playle and Mary Currie
( Ross ) were married in Yambercollie 1st July 1856. I have nothing on Samuel Playle and the only info on the two Joseph Playles you'll find in a previous posting. I have no record of William 1872. You'll find the other siblings I have in a previous posting.

Thank you Bob 22, for your prompt response. Your date corresponds with the date I have for Edwin and Amelia. The addition of the church is appreciated. I have all the children for them. I am glad to have William and Mary's wedding date confirmed also.
How many sibling does William have total? Did William tow the line after his early brush with the legal system? Thanks again for the assistance !

Hi Genmom711,
I have no record of siblings for William Playle. He got his ticket of leave 12th Dec 1842 after serving 4 years at Moreton Bay. I have no record of him until he married Mary Ross 14 years later. Perhaps someone has more information??
I've found the missing infant William. He died 20th July 1872 at two days old. I have his death certificate and Mary puts herself as the mother and William as the father, three years after he died! I have no idea who the father was or if the child was Mary's for that matter as she was almost fifty by then. Another mystery someone may have an answer for.

There are several mysteries that have evolved since I started look into Amelia Anne. I found her name in a tree posted on a personal site.
Besides the confusing details already detailed, there are more.
The gentleman who has the tree posted had a death certificate for Amelia but the parents name are inaccurate and what looks like to me a melding of family details, surnames etc.
There is a story posted on Ancestry for Susannah Shepard/ Doherty/ Atkins (by different folks , I presume) that further confuses the Doherty~Atkins story; when it comes to dates, details and parentage.
I don't want to mention the tree without the owners permission but it seems there may be a bit more to unravel. Earlier today I asked for permission to quote his tree for my source and received it but posting details in a forum may not be what gentleman is expecting. Looking at it well rested might make things clearer.
Thank you for the additional feedback!

Hi Chatso58,
The Photo of William does sound like in the Warialda book. I can only find one full length of Mary in the book.
If they are taken from actual photos and not just a scan from the book I would love them.
