Hello
I have just used the website Scotlands People for the first time in order to look at the details of a marriage on 30 July 1853 at Middle Parish , Greenock, Renfrewshire according to family search .
The entry being : David Wilkinson, boltmaker and Janet Chambers, both of this parish gave their names in order to Proclamation of Banns . They were regularly proclaimed .
During my research David stated that he was married on 16 August 1853 at Greenock . Will there be another marriage entry for that date that will give me more detail such as widow or widower etc. as
the English system does ?
When it states Middle Parish , is it possible to identify a church that the marriage took place at ?
Is their a chance that the marriage entry will appear on Scotlands people before I buy anymore credits ?
Thanks
Eric

Hi Eric
As the marriage was before 1855 it wont be on SP only the Banns which you already have
I'm sorry but I dont think you would be able to find out what church they married in
without a marriage cert
if you know their religion it may narrow it down a bit or an address
as they may have married in their local church

Hi Eric
I had a look on IGI for children of David and Janet to see if it gave any clues
to were in Greenock they lived
these are some children born to David Wilkinson and Janet (Chalmers)possibly a variation)
Mary Wilkinson born 6th April 1855 Greenock
David " born 6th January 1858 died before January 1963
John Burton " born 7th July 1860
David " born 1st January 1863
Margaret " born 2nd May 1865
all these births would be on SP
the birth of Mary would give you a possible address for the couple in Greenock
it would maybe also give details of all children born to Janet so if she had been married
before she may have had children in that marriage

Hello Elaine
Thanks for your two replies and advice . I was going to come back to you to let you know what information I already have and if you could have a look at it then I would be very grateful . :)
I have the information about the children but thanks for looking .
I do have the birth entry for Mary from SP and the address is given as 11,Blanhope or Blarhope Street , Greenock . I am sorry but I am unable to show you the spelling but that is what it looks like .
There is another son called Robert who was born in Greenock around 1854 but I have not viewed his details as yet .
In addition to the above I know that David was born in Manchester and is protestant/Church of England . Born about 1825
Janet was born in Glasgow in an area what looks like Woodside neighbourhood or similar . I have not come across her religion. Born about 1829 .
In 1857 the family move to Glasgow and other children are born , Janet dies in 1866 and it looks like the family then fall on hard times .In 1868 David applies to the parish for poor relief and I have a copy of the application . The writing is faint but it states they married as we know 16 August 1853 at Greenock . Now there is a name prior to the word Greenock and it is not very legible ,but if you are good at crosswords then you may be able to help . It looks like Hollyinge or something similar . I do not know if that is the name of the church or a place name , but I do know the Rev. John WILSON did the service . I am afraid that is all I can tell you . Many thanks for taking the time to help .
Eric ;)

Hi Eric
I will look through the certs I have of my own around that time
see if I can find the rev John Wilson amongst them
I think the street name on Mary's cert will probably be Bearhope st
its pronounced (BIRRUP street)
I will need to get the thinking cap on for the Hollyinge one though

Hi
Back then most marriages did not seem to take place in the church itself so until civil registrations commenced in 1855 the actual location of the marriage wouldn't be stated.

Hello Andy
Thanks for your input . I notice that you are not resident in Scotland but I would like to find ou a little more about your information .
I do not know if you can help but I am sure somebody can :)
What exactly is Middle Parish ? Are we talking of a large area and well populated ?How many churches would there be in such an area ?
Would'nt there be any record of all the marriages that took place and if so where would those records be stored ?
Hope someone can comment because I would like to include it in my family history write up .
Thanks again
Eric ;)

Hi
If it is any help to you my 2x Great Granparents were married in Middle Parish in Greenock in 1860 and the Church was Cartsburn Church.
I think middle parish may have related not to a church itself but perhaps a bit like old election wards - now called constituencies.
Carstburn as an area was situated towards the east of the town near the James Watt Dock

Hi Eric
I'm not familiar with Greenock itself but it looks like it was large enough to consist of a number of parishes of which one was Middle Parish. You would need someone with local knowledge to advise re the church(s). Many parishes consisted of one church but some larger parishes may have also had smaller chapels.
I've downloaded dozens of marriages in Scotland between 1855 and 1910 and not one took place within a church. I've also seen reference to this on forums.
The OPR's usually records the banns and the date used is usually the date of the first reading. If the bride and groom are from different parishes you sometimes find two entries, one for each parish, sometimes it will state the parish were the marriage took place but often it doesn't.

sorry Eric I meant to get back to you
the address on the cert is definately 11 Bearhope street
Middle Parish means just that it was the middle of Greenock
what we would now call the town centre
as for church's
there were quite a few that your family could have attended
now I am not sure if there are records for these church's but if so
they would probably be kept at the General registry office
I have looked through a lot of the marriage certs I have and could't see
any Rev John Wilson I googled his name though found some but couldn't be sure if
they were the right ones no mention of any church they served at

Hello ,
Thanks to all who have replied . I have a better understanding now of the set up .
Elaine : thanks for deciphering my certificate . I don't suppose there are any local images online for that area ?
Mrs T; I will check that church out . Thanks
Ruskie: I have checked the link you set up and I found it helpful . Guess what , the extract was taken from a book called Gazeteer of Scotland 1882 . Author Rev. John WILSON .
He seemed to be quite a learned character and lived 1804 to 1875 . Preached the gospel all over the world so he must have been one of the main clergy of the day .
I will have to see if he appears on the 1851 census now I have a possible age .
Anyway thanks again for all the info .
Eric :)
