Hi calling all Flannery's
I am trying to trace relatives of my husband's side of the family who came from Nenagh, Co Tipperary. Would love to hear from you.
My husband Ned, is an only child whose father, a plumber by trade, died when he was nearly 2 yrs old. His mother was one of a family of 12 children, so naturelly he knew his mother's side of the family but unfortunately never knew his father's side. They lived in Tyone, Nenagh. Ned's mother used to say "when you looked out her door, you could see the smoke from 7 Flannery chimneys". I do remember meeting a cousin a long time ago when visiting Nenagh I think his name was Philip Flannery, and if I am not mistaken he was also a plumber.
My husband Ned Flannery was born in Nenagh to:
(1) Edward Flannery b 1894 Pound Street, who married 20 Feb 1935, in Church of St. Michael, Eglish, Terryglass by Rev. J Clune P.P. Borrisokane to Hanora Nolan of Terryglass. His parents were:
(2) Neddie Flannery & Margaret Spain of Whitewalls, Nenagh, who married Feb 1893 St. Mary of the Rosary R.C.Church, Nenagh, Co Tipperary. Neddie was the eldist of at least 7 children. 1 Neddie, 2 Daniel, 3 Michael, 4 William, 5 Philip who married Molly Tierney. I think they had a pub in Pound Street, called "The Dapp Inn" or they managed it don't know which. They had a son also called Edward. The 6th John & 7th Maryanne were twins born 1903.
(3) Neddie's parents were Edward Flannery bc 1806 married c 1839 to Maryanne Walsh, they had about 6 children. 1 Philip, 2 Michael, 3 Mary b 1848 married John Wade and had a son Johnny Wade who died 1961 in Tyone, Nenagh with Ned's Mother. 4 Johanna 1851-1929, a farmer on the census, of Tyone, who never married. 5 Jack, 6 Neddie, 7 Catherine bp Nov 1860, 8 Bridget bp Jul 1863.
(4) Neddie's parents were Philip Flannery & Mary Kenna who married c 1792 and I know of 4 children born to them. 1 John bp 1793, 2 Bridget bp 1795, Sally bp 1797, 4, Edward bc 1806 married c 1839 Mary Anne Walsh.
Does any of the above ring any bells? I only hope so. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely
Julia M F

The Dapp Inn was, up to a few years ago, on the corner of Sarsfield St and Pound Road (sometimes Pound Lane), Nenagh. I haven't been there in a number of years.
Maybe someone with local knowledge could tell you if its still there and if it's still owned by Flannerys.
Also. I wonder was Sarsfield St. known as Pound St. before Independence?
Dara.

Hi Julia
Have you checked the Flannery Clan website (www.flanneryclan.ie)? There are a lot of transcribed records that pertain to your area of interest, and some of our members would be related to the family in question.

Hi Jackie,
Have been off the computer for a few weeks, but am back on again. Lovely to hear from you. I am a Flannery by marriage, but I do think we are on the same track.
I have an Edward Flannery bc 1806 Farmer who married Mary Anne Walsh, they had 8 children that I know of.
1 Philip bp 1840: sponsors John Flannery & Johanna Walsh.
2 Michael bp. 1846:
3 Mary bp 1848: Sponsors Phil Flannery & Mgt. Kelly.
4 Joanna bp 1851: Sponsors Wm Nolan & Mary Dillon.
5 John (Called Jack) bp 1853:
6 Edward bp 1859: Sponsors Michael Walsh & Catherine Flannery
7 Catherine bp 1860: Sponsors Edmond Shanahan & Anne Dillon
8 Bridget bp 1863. Sponsors Matthew Ryan & Mary Keles
Do you recognise these names? The only information on Catherine I have is her baptism date. The Edward is my husband's Grandfather, he got married in St. Mary of the Rosary R.C.Church, Nenagh, Co Tipperary 11 Feb 1893. His father also Edward was "deceased at this time".
Mary married & had one son. Joanna never married.

Hi
I don't think I have Flannery family but I do have Spain from Nenagh(CatherineSpain) unsure of birth only have she married Daniel Kelly. All this information comes from my 2rd Great Grandfather James Kelly Death Certificate in Australia. He was born abt 1833 Rapla Nenagh. Was wondering what information you may have on the Spain from Nenagh
Thanks

Hi,
Although this is a very old post I am reading, I thought I would try my luck with the Flannerys too.
I am researching my husband's 2nd great grandfather, Denis or Dennis Flannery who was born in Tipperary around 1795. He was tried for a crime in 1823 and sent as a convict to Australia on the Prince Regent in 1824.
He did eventually get his freedom and after first marrying another convict, Anne Moore or Wilkinson, he married Janet McLeod or McCloud in 1841. The marriage produced two children, John Angus and Mary Flannery.
I am keen to find out any information about them.
I have seen a birth notice for a 'Dinis' Flannery in Nenagh in 1795 to Patt and Bridget (Biddy) Flannery and in 1820 saw a Dennis Flannery as witness to the wedding of Mary Flannery to John BRIEN. A Bridget Flannery was also a witness. Not sure if he is my man.
Anyone who can shed light on any of this, please do!
Thank you,
Lynn Flannery, WA

Hi, Julia.
Your husband is on my father's family tree (b. 1937). His mother was Bridget Flannery from Nenagh. He has Edward's wife recorded as Maeve deceased 15 September 2012!!!! Anyone recognise this, please? Sincere apologies if this post upsets anyone.

Hi everyone.
My almost 92yr. old father handed me his extensive family tree earlier this year as it's getting too much for him to manage. He has quite a bit of info about his Nenagh Flannery side. I will share some of this in due course. For now, I can tell you that the earliest Flannery he has recorded is Philip Flannery b.1769 in Nenagh who Married Mary Kenna in 1792. Dad has information about several family lines that descended from this couple. My Grandmother was a Flannery from the Dublin Rd. in Nenagh. This road was also known as McDonagh St., and The Spout Rd. I hadn't realised I had posted on this site a couple of years ago until I got a notification that it was active yesterday!
Happy Christmas, Everyone.

Hi Des,
My Great Grandmorher was Mary Flannery Born about 1854, her father was Daniel Flannery. At the time she married in 1876 she lived in Townsend St Parsonstown (Birr).
I have no other details of Mary’s family. I saw your message and was hoping there maybe a connection. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to RootsChat, Flanfam :)
D H unfortunately hasn't been active on RootsChat since June 2020 so you may not receive a response. If his email is still current, then he will receive a notification of your post.
When you have made at least 2 posts, you can use the personal message (PM) system to exchange information. Just click on the clipboard looking icon under his user name, or click his user name directly. If the clipboard glows green he is online.
At the time she married in 1876 she lived in Townsend St Parsonstown (Birr).
This presumably was your gt grandmother's 1876 marriage to Robert Joseph Homewood, a sergeant in the 53rd regiment and stationed at Birr barracks.

Thank you RootsChat.Com Team for your reply.
Do you know of anywhere I can find records of my Great Grandmother, Mary Flannery's birth?
I can only assume it may have been around the Birr area in approx 1854.
