Title: Gairbraid, Baillieston
Post by: Bikerboy on Saturday 08 August 09 22:07 BST (UK)
Does anyone know where or what Gairbraid was in 1870's Baillieston? My gt gt grandmother died there after an operation performed by Dr James Dickson. She was living in the Faskine area of Airdrie till then.
I know there a Gairbraid Street exists today but I'm thinking there my have been a big house or hospital of that name.

Thanks

Hi Bikerboy

If you type Gairbraid into Google you will find that it was a large country house.
There are various bits of information giving the history etc along with old photos.

Cheers

Dex

'fraid not. I've been up that blind alley already. The Gairbraid which comes up on Google is a big house in Glasgow but was not located in Ballieston. I've already double checked this at the Mitchell library. Shame, because it would have fitted perfectly.
So I'm back to square one.
Thanks for looking.

Bikerboy, I believe the ancestor you are referring to is also my own, Catherine (Cairnen/Kerman) Hoolaghan. I just found the death record, googled, "Gairbraid" and found your post. I am descended from her daughter, who immigrated to America. I would love to learn anything more about this line, I do not know much.

I've just revisited this thread after two years and found the query from genresearch1 which I seem to have completely missed.
I'd be happy to help but should say I'm not aware of a daughter who immigrated to America, so who was she?

My 2nd great-grandmother was Margaret Hoolihan, the youngest child of Patrick Hoolihan and Catherine Cairnen/Cairns.

She was born in Faskine in 1860, married John Gilmore in 1880 in Bothwell, and immigrated to the USA between 1882 and 1885. They remained there, had several children and Margaret died in 1941 in New Jersey.

So far I only found one other family line that came to America: Katie (Hoolihan) McNally, daughter of Margaret's brother Charles. Katie died in her early 40's in New Jersey and after her death, her son Richard McNally lived with my 2nd great grandmother.

The only other family lines that I found that left Scotland were through Mary Hoolihan, sister of Margaret and Charles. After Mary's son Patrick Conway died, his widow and children gradually immigrated to Canada.

If you have any information on Patrick and Catherine's ancestry, or where they are believed to be from in Ireland, I would be interested to hear more. All I have is Catherine's parents' names from her death certificate.

Are you on FamilyTreeDNA or GedMatch? Which line are you descended from?

Thanks!

Thank you Sancti. Looks like a bullseye. I've now searched the other Kilronan registers for Hoolaghans but found only two mentions. Looks like the family came from elsewhere. I'll spread the search outwards.
