Title: CARROLL- HARTIGAN -Limerrick-Australia
Post by: Elaine D on Saturday 08 August 09 17:16 BST (UK)
My GG Grandfather, JOHN CARROLL, went to South Australia on the CHARLOTTE JANE in 1852 with his wife, sons Patrick, John, Edmund and Thomas. Also daughters, Johanna and Maria, my great grandmother. My great grandmother was born/baptized 18/01/1847 at EFFIN parish in GARRENDERK district, County Limerick. Her mother was Joanna Hartigan. The sponsors were Thomas HARTIGAN and Joanna QUILAN. Does this family connect with yours?
Hope to hear, Elaine D

I am descended from Thomas Carroll from Effin in Limerick. He was born sometime between 1797 & 1801. In 1827 he was transported to Australia for life after being convicted for firing houses. I have been unable to go any further back than Thomas & have not been able to find out any information about his family etc. Would be very interested to know if his name has come up in any of your research.

Hi - wish I could help you but I have very little knowledge about the Carroll's. My great grandmother, Marie Carroll, was born in Effin in 1847. Her parents were John Carroll and Johanna Hartigan.  In 1863 she married John Taylor in Adelaide, South Australia and had three children. She came to America [New York City] in 1876 with the three children. I haven't been able to find when she went to Australia. Was she an adult or did she come with her parents when she was a child? So many unanswered questions and I wish that I had information for you. The Catholic church record start in Effin in 1834 so they would not be too helpful. Good luck with your quest. Bunny

HI Kris - I don't know if Mary was a second wife or not but that record of  the Charlotte Jane was what lead me to look for my great grandmother's birth in Limerick. The family on the Charlotte Jane may not be my family because of birth records that I was able to get from the church in Effin. John Carroll and Johanna Hartigan had other children born there:- Catherine born in 1849, Michael born 1852, Joanna born 1853, another Michael born 1858 and James born in 1864. So it looks like they were still in Ireland. The birth record for Maria Carroll I got first from the Irish History Foundation website and then from the catholic church in Effin - Our Lady Queen of Peace. Of coarse I could have the wrong Maria Carroll but what are the chances of two people being born on the exact birth date and with the same set of parents that are on her death certificate from New York City. My father and his siblings didn't know much about their grandparents such as any brothers and sisters or when she went to South Australia. There is a Thomas Carroll listed as a witness  on some marriage records that I have  for 1866 and 1870. These names are all so common - that doesn't help with the problem.                                        Thank you for your response, Bunny

Hello again - The three children of Maria Carroll and John Taylor were all baptized at St. Ignatius Church in Norwood. Maybe there is a connection between the families. Bunny

Hi Elaine,

Yes doesn't sound like your family arriving in 1852 if they were having children in Effin until 1864. I was at the library today and Father Thomas's obit does not help with his family unfortunately.

The only other arrival I could find for a Maria CARROLL was aboard the MARY SHEPPERD 19 Apr 1863 a domestic servant aged 19

Mainly single females aboard. one list really hard to read I think said from Monmouth the other said England

Conduct: Well      Behaved very badly

Cheers Kris  :)

Hi Kris - The Maria Carroll on the ship Mary Shepperd  is 3years older than my Maria Carroll but people do lie about their ages for whatever reason. Trouble is that there are so many Maria Carroll's. I'll keep trying. I guess if this search was easy it wouldn't be any fun. Hope that your research is going better than mine. Thank you for the info, Elaine "Bunny"

My Great  Grandfather was John Moloney, who along with Patrick and Edmund Moloney sailed to South Australia on the "Charlotte Jane" in 1852. They were written up as Carroll's, on the ship's list.
John Carroll and Mary Carroll both aged 36 as parents.. so Mary Carroll must previously been married to a Moloney. Together they had Thomas and Mary. Edmund became a lay brother and is buried in the crypt at Seven Hills South Australia.

Hello Mary, In my previous posts to CARROLL- HARTIGAN I've told the story of my research thus far on the Carroll's. How did you find information on the MOLONEY'S and their tie in to the CARROLL family? Maybe this isn't my family and it is just a quirk of fate that lead me to a Maria in Limerick. I started looking at passenger lists to South Australia because I know that she was in the Adelaide area because that's where she married John Taylor and had three children.I have all the records to support these events from St. Patrick's. I really didn't know where to look for her in Ireland. The church records in Effin, Limerick have a record for Maria Carroll and the birth date is the same that I have from her baptism along with the same parent names that are on her death certificate, John Carroll and Johanna Hartigan.
I guess if this were easy it wouldn't any fun but it would be nice to get answers that fills in some blanks once in awhile. Hope to hear from you, Bunny [Elaine Taylor Ryczek]

Mary Carroll who came out on the Charlotte Jane was a 2nd wife to John Carroll, because her boys Patrick,John, and Edmund were Moloney's, but listed on the ship's passenger list a Carroll's.

a friend was researching her "Barry" family.  My Great Grandfather John Moloney,(born Limerick Ireland 1838, died Maitland South Australia May 23rd 1923.)  son of John who came out from Ireland , married Mary Barry. she knew the original John had come from Ireland but could find no record of his arrival in SA, until I told her re the "Carroll" connection.

re the Hartigan name in the title.   My Great Uncle Patrick Moloney, MSC, missionary of the Sacred Heart was a great friend of Patrick Joseph Hartigan, "John O'Brien" author of "Around the Boree Log".  He would visit the Moloney family who lived on the Yorke Peninsula sometimes, and the poem "The Old Mass Shandrydan" is supposedly about them arriving at Mass with chooks(Fowls, chickens) aboard as well. At Narranderah NSW's every March is a festival celebrating Msg Hartigan. My grandmother Marie(Mary?) Kenny, was married to  Daniel Hanrahan - wonder if there is a connection to where "We'll all be ruined! said Hanrahan" comes from.

I have a letter written to my Aunt in 1981 from Margaret Moloney (she married Maurice  Honner and when he died, a Fitzgerald -known as Madge, who was the daughter of Thomas J. Moloney a son of the John who came out from Ireland in 1852. TJ Moloney  moved from Maitland SA to Junee in NSW. Patrick also moved to New South Wales. Madge  would have known  her Grandfather Moloney.

The ships passenger list of the "Charlotte Jane", leaving from London/Plymouth October 1851 ad arriving in Adelaide 14th of January 1852, list John and Mary Carroll - both 36, John as being born in Limerick. Children listed are Patrick 17, John 16, (his death notice states that he too was born in Limerick Ireland in1838, died on 1923 aged 85) Edmund, 13. (under the name of Carroll. but were Moloney's.) Johanna 13, and Edmund 13?? Maria 5 and Thomas 3. Thomas Carroll was ordained as a Jesuit priest. He died in Adelaide in 1938. His sister Mary Carroll married Thomas Horgan. my Great Grandfather John, married Mary Barry and they had 14/16? children. some died early or in infancy.

Thomas Carroll was born in Ireland 1848, one of the early boys at Sevenhill entered the Jesuit order and was ordained in 1880. He died in Adelaide in 1838. I have visited the crypt of the St Aloysius Church at Sevenhill in the Claire Valley of Sth Aus where Brother Edmund Moloney is buried.

Hello,
Sorry I am late to the party.  I hope this thread is still active.
My gggrandmother was Nora Carroll Callaghan, who (I am almost certain) was John Carroll's sister.  Her family was evicted from the Callaghan ,ands in Kilbreedy Minor in 1844 and sublet from James Carroll until she died.  Her husband John Callaghan took the family to South Australia and settled in Hectorville where his daughter Mary Callaghan Burns was living.  I think the May and John Byrne who were the witnesses tot he Mar Carrolll-John Taylor marriage were actually Mary and John Burns.  (The Burns name went through several transitions from Byrne to Byrnes to Burns in the mid 1800s, but there was also a Byrne family in Hectorville at the time.)  I am hoping to find a dna match from the Taylor line to tie us together.  My dna is at Ancestry.com, 23&Me, and GEDMatch.
Thanks.
