Hello all,
Elizabeth Altoft was born in 1854 in Thorne Union Workhouse
Her mother is shown as Jane Altoft.
I have found a Jane Altoft aged 20 in 1841 census on a farm in Bottesford, Lincolnshire.
In 1891 census she is shown as single aged 70 born Bottesford, living in Messingham, Lincolnshire.
1881 census shows a Jane Altoft unmarried aged 60 in Sculcoates. Her age and status look good but her birthplace is shown as Louth in Lincolnshire.
1871 census for Sculcoates also has a Jane Altoft unmarried aged 47 from Botsworth (Bottesford) Lincolnshire
1861 census has the same Jane unmarried, aged 36 from Botsford, Lincolnshire.
The only census record I can find for Eliza Altoft is in 1871. She is shown as aged 16 from Epworth, living with her sister Maria Kelsey(26) and her family in Lancashire. Jane had an elder brother William and one of his children was Maria born 1846 in Epworth. Possibly Elizabeth was brought up by William but she does not appear in William's household in 1861 census.
Finally Elizabeth married Jabez Arthur Brundish in 1875 in Lancashire and later moved back to Epworth.
I really would like to know where Elizabeth (or Eliza) was in 1861.

I really would like to know where Elizabeth (or Eliza) was in 1861.

Hello Geoff,
Quick as ever I see.
There are two entries on FreeBMD
Elizabeth Altoft 4th quarter 1854 Thorne 9c 423
Eliza Altoft 1st quarter 1855 Thorne 9c 471
I have Elizabeth's BC which shows her mother as Jane Altoft; I suspect Eliza (b 1855) is the daughter of William and Maria Altoft, which would make the 1871 census straightforward where she is living with her sister in Lancashire.
My fault, some weeks ago I moved Eliza out of family while trying to sort out Elizabeth/Eliza, then forgot to put her back.
Still leaves me trying to find Elizabeth daughter of Jane in 1861.
Will check again if I have MC for Jabez Brundish and Eliza Altoft.
Regards Martin

Hi,
The same request is on the West Yorkshire board - have replied there but will repeat on here. There is Elizabeth Altoft living in Thorne in 1861 with Jane (1831, Butterwick), Janes sister Charlotte (1844, Butterwick) and their mother Elizabeth (1801 Butterwick). This record is on FindMyPast but I do not have credits so have found this information through the advanced search!
This family is easy to follow, Jane Altoft marries William Dobson in Easingwold in 1867 and daughter Elizabeth is working as a servant in York in 1871.
I feel that Elizabeth born in Thorne to Jane is not yours. On the marriage to Jabez in 1875 that lady is listed as Eliza Jane and indeed have seen her on a census listing as Eliza J.

Actually there must be a problem with Thorne in 1861 census on A******y, as I can find Eliza born 1855 living in Thorne on FindMyPast (still no credit), there appears to be in the same house William Altoft (1810), Maria Altoft (1810), John Henry (1848) and Mary Ann (1852).

Added: Oops silly me found Eliza as Alsoft and then saw that Geoff E had already found it, earlier in the thread!

To Geoff and Kath,
Had a peek at FindMyPast and sure enough;
Elizabeth Altoft Head Married (husband from home) 61 born Lincs, W. Butterwick
Jane daughter Un 30 Lincs, W. Butterwick
Charlotte " " 17 " " "
Elizabeth granddaughter 6 Yorks, Thorne.
That's good enough for me, this is almost certainly the one born in the workhouse at Thorne. My Eliza Altoft is most probably in William's family living in High Street, Epworth.
With regard to death registered in Thorne Dec 1859; don't know, but obviously not mine as she lived to about 1898.
Thanks again,
Martin

Elizabeth Altoft born Thorne work house in 1854 is my great grand mother
Married William Johnson in Crayke in June 1876
He mother Jane Dobson was unmarried but went to Crayke and married William Dobson in 1867
Have BMD Certs and have followed all Jane's descendants to 1911
Happy to share
Family tale is that Elizabeth's father was Edward VIIth .. highly unlikely as he was 12 at the relevant time...
Robin
ps the Altoft carried on as a middle name for several generations
