Can anyone do anything to help poor Hannah God bless her she certainly needs it !!
An approximation of the date of the photo and age of the "subject" would be very useful
Thanks in anticipation
Sue

Gave it a wee try.

I just tweaked Charles great restore to try and make her look a little happier...

An attempt from me. It looks as if it could be a studio copy of a an earlier picture. Is the picture reversed, or is the ring really on her right hand.
Robert

Colour for Hannah.
Bill.

Hi Sue....Another one to add to the list.
Carolyn :)
-
Hi everyone
Thank you very much to Charles, xin, Robert, Bill and Carolyn you have all done a marvellous job on a very dour subject.
I don't really know who she is except that she is an ancestor of my granda - grandmother or great grandmother ?
Robert the photo is as I scanned it - I haven't turned it, so yes her wedding band is on the wrong hand - but do I get a glimpse of one on her other hand or have I got stars in my eyes ???
I do envy her waistline !!! Any thoughts about her age or when this could have been taken?
Regards
Sue
-
I think the waistline could be cause for the expression in her eyes ;D
xin

Going by the way her dress is buttoned the picture is the correct way round, I seem to remember it was mentioned recently on RootsChat that in Germany the wedding ring is worn on the right hand.
Bill.
-
Hi Bill
No she is definately English. Either from Cornwall or Cumberland. I suppose it could be her mothers wedding ring and she is wearing her own correctly????
Xin - I agree - I certainly am glad that corsets aren't a required element these days !!!!

Hello Sue
Early 1870's for a date, possibly as early as 1869.Do you have the original?
jim
-
Hi Jim
Yes I have the original
It is on a postcard - communication as a heading on one side and address only on the other
square corners
J Taylor is inscribed on the front corner 77 standish street burnley
Sue
-
I have another copy of this photo which is on paper mounted on really thick card. On the back of the card is a brown paper with the words Sketch Portrait embossed into the paper
Why it would be a burnley studio - I have no idea
Regards

Hello Sue
So this is a copy of the original. The postcard being post 1902,maybe copied after her death.

And also she's silvering out, that's the weird shiny effect, and the silver gelatin process didn't come into general use until about 1886 or so iirc.
That tiny waistline is the result of having been forced into a whalebone and/or steel-banded corset from the age of 10 or 11. It restricted her respiration, cut off her circulation and likely gave her acid reflux. Was it worth it to look like that?? :o
Cheers,
China
-
OK China, you've convinced me..... I'll take mine off then. :-\
Bill. ::)
-
Lol China !!! ;D
There had to be something going for her because, bless her, she certainly was not an oil painting !!!!
Sue
So do we think this was late 1890's ?? Anyone like to try and hazard a guess on her age ?

Hello ALL Just Passing by, to put my pennyworth in.
I tend to think that it is around 1880-5's. But what took my eye is her wedding ring on her right hand. The majority of people in the UK have it on the third finger left hand.
My wife was German and we married in Germany I still wear mine on my right hand as many others do on the Continent. Not knowing exactly with what type of camera used, it could be from a reversed negative. But I tend to think she "bless her" was either married to a foreigner, or was of Conental birth.
That the addres is in Burnley could only mean in this case that is was a copy of an earlier one taken abroad.
Just a thought, might help a little...difficult though
Good Luck
Kind Regards

to clear up any confusion the original was taken 1869-73ish & copied post 1902.This is the copy.
jim
-
I think it has been suggested that in some cases the wedding ring was worn on the right hand after betrothal and transferred to the left hand on marriage.
Robert
-
thank you everyone very much for your time and trouble
So this photo was taken in the late 1860's early 1870's - how old do you think she is in this photo? about 35 ish?
sue
-
Yes, a copy. The copy is post mid 1880s because of the silvering-out.
I wonder if the original was an ambrotype, or a tintype. Because then the image would be reversed....
Cheers,
China
-
Sue, I think she's quite young - early 20's. Very few lines on her face.
What does everyone else think?
-
I wonder if the original was an ambrotype,
The bodice is fastened the correct way.
jim
-
Oh my life - fancy looking like that in your 20's !!!! yes possibly she was or her skin was very stretched !!
I would probably er to her early 30's
Sue

Its possibly a lady called hannah born abt 1862 married aged 18 lost her first husband 6 years later then remarried age 26
would she wear her 1st husbands ring on one hand and her subsequent husbands on the other ? or is she born too late for this photo?
sue
-
Too late I'm afraid.I would say this lady was born around 1840.
jim
-
alternatively it could be harriet hancock born 1846 married aged 29 in 1875, second wife to James Bond who remarried when harriet died in 1889
sue
-
so this lady attached - could she be the daughter or the stern lady
the lady attached is alberta bond 1st child of harriet born 1846
sue
-
I think this was taken early 1920's.She looks in her 30's.
I suppose if her 1st. child was born 1880 & you believe this lady to be nearer 40 it's a possibility.
jim
-
Alberta Bond the lady in this photo was born 1883
Sue
-
This is the same woman about 1924 i think
-
In that case I would say you're on a winner.
jim
-
thank you for all your help jim and everyone else who has conributed
regards
Sue
-
I agree these are descendants of that tiny waisted lady the eyes have a similar look..
xin
-
Just come across this thread... very interesting :)
Igor
I think the lack of lines on her face is caused by the cinched waist :o :o :o :o ;D [ouch, ouch ouch]
If she was poured into this girdle from an early age, surely she would have come from an upper class family ??? ??? The hoi polloi wouldn't bother... just get her out into service asp.
Mark :)
-
Thanks everyone for your opinions
I don't think she was upper class - far from it, however prob upper working class
Her husbands gravestone is huge and sited right beside the church as is her husbands third wife and her family
So maybe they had a bit of cash
Regards
Sue
and thank you again
