I am very interested and wonder how you managed to obtain them. I have seen those o f Philip`s Park cemetary when they we still held there. Would you know if Queen`s Park cemetary maps are also available?I believe it is now a closed cemetary . I am pretty certain some of my mother`s family-aunts etc and infant siblings who died very very young. Any info on ei ther Philip`s park and Queen`s Park most gratefully recieved. Viktoria,

Manchester General is closed to new graves but still open to existing plot owners.

This cemetery is unusual in so much as only 2 sections CH (Church of England) and NC (Non Com) are here. People of the Roman Catholic faith may be buried here but they will be in NC sections.

All the council cemetries are getting a face lift at the moment, and I must say they are looking better for it.

Good evening failsafe

I have just read your message and i wonder if you could look to see if there is any George Hindley buried either at Gorton or Manchester cemetry. If so i would love to have a copy of the cemetry plots especially if they are all named as i may find a few more relatives.

Thank you

Hi please send me a PM with your email address and which cemetery map you wanted and i will email it to you. Bear in mind the map is of the cemetery based on the sequestering that Manchester do, e.g. plot K, it does not contain the burial/grave numbers, unfortunately.

Yep sadly  :( failsafe they do still charge - but the information they do let you have is in valuable "all you pay for really is the burial register image". The grave number that comes up does cover RC/CofE & NC sections but it is very easy to work out who's who by checking the 3 locations.

We have an on going project which at the moment is just covering Philips Park, the aim is to make available the plot number locations maps for all Manchester council cemeteries, these plans are a god send in locating a plot, but copyright issues at the moment prevent us from offering any information from or about them.

Regards
Ken

I will check my usual search site & see if it comes up if you want.
I suspect it may be Moston or Phillips park.

I have only ever been into Phillips park via the entrance on Alan Turing Way (Gt-grandparents are in plot "A" by the entrance.

I didnt realise it went right the way round by the river!
Its loads bigger than I thought!

given me a few queries tho - I have a grave number "8" in gorton - and no ideas which plot!

Hi Gaille
I assume you got the maps then?

If it is within your distance then It might be worthwhile having
a look-see. There may be someone in the office who might be able to
help you.

You could try and do a search via Manchester Council Website, just look under burials,
but from what I've been told it doesn't come cheap.

Another option would be to post a new thread and see if any Root Chatters will be able to assist you as some go round taking photos of graves. Worth a try.

Sorry I can't be of much help.
Good luck

Hi Margaret
If you send me a PM with your email addy I will send you all Manchester's Cems in a zip file.
Crumpsall Workhouse was an annex to the hospital (North Manchester General Hospital as it is now known) and had the block which now deals with pyscriatic patients. Sometimes they had there own burial grounds, but records would have been kept in the registration district.

Moston cem is a RC cemetery, so if who you are looking for is not of that religion, then Moston is out.
More plausible, depending on the time frame you are working on, would be the General (often
referred to as Queens Park) or Philips Park.

Good luck

Hi I use this one to double check details:

http://www.burialrecords.manchester.gov.uk/GenSearch.aspx

What I ususaly do is go check the BDM records, then put the name in along with the date of death, and add 6 weeks on the search option & see what comes up.

I also use the Lancashire online parish Clerks site to see if I can find names on there.

Basically I used about 3 sites in conjunction.

I also have a good contact in one of the Cemeteries that helps me out on occasions - lol all came from a query about a database that was wrong, and we ended up on great email terms, he is a great help when I am stuck!

I am sorry!

I typed up a thank you & forgot to send it!
(Customers at work distracted me!)

My problem at Gorton is the Burial is my Mums baby cousin Aged 3 or 4 months, he is buried in his grandparents grave - and the grandparents names are mistrancribed on the index.

I was talking to the database manager the oter day & he says it will be updated in the next few weeks (january is a busy month) when thats done i am going to see about getting a proper transcript.

Hadnt thought of asking for help to be honest, might do that, poor little baby has all but been forgotten apart from by me & his brothers wife - no one else seems to remember he was even born - even my Mum didnt know about him, and shes his cousin.

Hi Jan

The maps are a layout of the different plots, they do not provdie burial plots or names etc.
In essence they are a map of different plots depending on religious denomination, but might
prove useful to you. I will send them to you in a zip file, let me know when you receive them please.

You can make a search via Manchester Council website, keyword burials, but this can be quite expensive if you don't have all the relevant details.

Good luck
I will send them to you asap

I have tried googling but I cant seem to get anywhere.
All Saint and Orford Rd are both long gone now, but I would like a visual idea of the layout, cos I have seen both and wondered how they were laid out.

Hi, try OXFORD RD> for All Saints. The Church stood in a circular plot inside a square enclosure. The entrance(west door)faced up towards St Peter`s square quite a way off. The east end was up towards Cavendish street . The square area surrounding the Church was Grosvenor square on both E and W sides. The circular plot surrounding the Church had 3 entrances  with paths1 from G square E    1 from Gsquare W and 1 from Oxford road which was on the N side .  I can remember it well  as I often went to the museum at the University and passed All Saints . It was a most immpressive building  although damaged in the 1940 blitz. The 10,000people who were interred in the grave yard are still there and the site is a garden . There appear to be4 vaults on the south side of the Church on the 1831 map I am looking at. This is BANK`S & CO`S plan of MANCHESTER & SALFORD . Survey done by Richard Thornton in 1831. Re-issued by Neil |Richardson in 1982. Original in Greater Manchester Record Office. Hope this helps . Imagine a circle inside a square with the sides of the circle almost touching the square at 4 points leaving almost triangular corners except the  sides nearest the Church are of course curved .I am not sure if these  were the burial plots or the  circular plot immediately surrounding the Church divided by the three e ntrances with paths to the Church .                     Viktoria .     [/quote

Hi Vicktoria,

Thank you for the description :)

I think we are on different All Saints tho, I think the one you are describing is in the City?
The one I was meaning is at the junction of Briscoe lane & Church Street in Newton Heath, and Orford road is its 'overspill' cemetery as it only had a tiny churchyard due to being on enclosed on 3 sides by roads.

Hi Failsafe, Yes wrong All Saints Sorry. I do know  your All Saints too but not the cemetery. It is so close to Philip`s park cem I`d never thought about it. A lovely little Church and very old I believe -not Victorian -a rebuild in 1808-1815 of the former16th C one. The graveyard extension has sadly been closed since 1969 and converted into playing fields. My apologies I thougt it was a litle slip of the finger Orford - Oxford. Best of luck with your search Viktoria

No plans of Orford Road are in the public domain as far as I am aware, the only thing to suggest would be to write to the Church warden at All Saints and ask the same question.

Good Luck
Ken

Its a case of chasing up the parish (if they still have records)

Hi
I don't suppose you have any cemetery maps for the Pendlebury or Barton upon Irwell cemeteries do you?  I don't know the Manchester area very well so I'm not sure if the places you listed would cover the area's I'm looking for.  If you don't have them could you suggest where I may be able to obtain them from please.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Thanks for the map that wasn't what I wanted.. I thought your comment about using Google first was foolish, considering I found this group and no not by magic, I spent hours last night trying to find this information and I did not read previous posts nor replies on this subject.
What I wanted was a map showing where the plot numbers are, not a map showing where Blackely Cemetery is.
My Mother & Father are both C of E.
Think you could help me with that ?
Thanks

Dear Failsafe,

Thank you for the speedy response. I received a copy of the Gorton Cemetery Plot Map from another member to the list within minutes after my post.

...can I ask a supplemental here (still learning the communications protocol as a new member)...

Is there a public available list that enables you to match the Grave number you get when you use the Manchester Burial Records Search with the Cemetery Plot maps ?

Cheers,

Barry
Title: Re: Manchester cemetery's plot maps
Post by: Mr. MIGKY on Sunday 15 February 09 09:18 GMT (UK)
In an answer NO, not any public ones other than what you pay for from Manchester burial site. You only get a number from that site and you have to pay for the full records which gives you the Letter that precedes the number. They also give you the age of the deceased, the address. Some time there profession or if married or not.
You can get most of this from Manchester central library, but as you are in Canada this is not an option for you.

Hi Tongue

The answer is as MIGKY has stated, unfortunately.

It would make our lives easier,
but everyone seems to want a payment off you. The information that we all request should be ours of as right, they are our relatives, and not the councils.

Why should we pay for information that is rightfully ours? They sting you when you are alive and when you are dead.

It's about time someone started a petition to prevent this outrageous exploitation

Thanks to both of you for your help...I am thinking it is actually a scheme of the local tourist board for encouraging visiting genealogists as it is becoming apparent it might be cheaper to fly in and look at records than pay the increasing costs.... ;)

I am now better informed on several fronts.

You can not send Privet messages untill you have posted three times on the forums.

Look at this   http://www.rootschat.com/help/pms.php

Don't forget you need the full burial number and letter plus what section they are in to stand a chnce of finding the right grave.

Hi Cowgirl1

As far as I am aware the burial plot numbers maps are not in general circulation, but you can make an appointment at Blackley Cemetery to view and photograph the plan/s you need "this is under the freedom of information act"

You cannot just turn up at Blackley you need to make an appointment, I think Mr Lunn is the person to ask for.

Hi Cowgirl1
MIGKY has answered best part of your query.
The maps don't contain burel plot numbers. They are cemetary layout maps which tell
you which section, for example section K, consecrated, is. Quite handy if you want this and to find your way out, for cemeteries can bea nightmare to navigate.

Details of plot numbers are held by the Council, you can do a searg but you will have to pay a fee for it
Soz can't be more helpful

Dear Migky and Failsafe,

Thank you both for your helpful suggestions, i have managed to get hold of a map of Gorton cemetery with the alphabetical section areas indicated.  I will make an appointment with Blakeley cemetery when I am next up there.

Does anybody know are the plot numbers just random or is there a logical sequence to them.  Has anybody seen a grave for ' James Molyneux Leach ' at Gorton cemetery plot 318 when they been researching?  we assume there is no headstone but we might be wrong about that.

thanks all good to join your group

Hey Cowgirl, might be worth you contacting this person as they seem to have the same picture as you of your g/g/greatgrandfather. You never know there might be a link to you and your family. They may have even paid for the burial records and give you the missing infomation you need to find the correct grave? AS they seem to know more about the history with them been a member of the Manchester&Lancashire family history society. They would also have access to maps and many records not available to none member like my self. Every avenue is worth exploring and as it is free too.

Hi Ken, Thanks for the download, unfortunately the location of the graves on the web site are done alphabetically, whilst the grave records i have are done numerically, any ideas . Thanks again Arthur

Hi Arthur

Did you get the numbers from this site http://www.burialrecords.manchester.gov.uk/ """ooppss looks like it has crashed again"""

When you get the grave details it gives you the locations as well, eg Fconformist or Acatholic these refer to section F CofE and so on, which can be found on the plans, we dont not have plot number location plans just yet

Ken

Arthur

Without them location letters and religion it will be like the "needle in a haystack" situation.

Who are you looking for and when did they die? I will try a contact I have in the council tomorrow for you... Can't guarantee but will do my best.

Hi,

Hope you can help.  I'm visiting M/c Mon 1st June to search for my ancestors graves.  A plot map of the General Cemetery (Harpurhey) would be great.
I'm a M/c lad but now living in the Midlands.

David.

Hi Ken

Thanks for that - I've just a tiny problem - I wasn't able to see Philips Park, I even went to 400% larger because there is a small one that I am still unable to read.  Is that Philips Park?

Do you have one of just Philips Park at all?

Thanks

Chrissy

Hi Ken,

Thanks to your help I located all three graves, unfortunatly only one still has it's headstone. The paupers grave,I shall have to do some more digging to find the reason why he was burried in that plot
                                             Once again many thanks Arthur

Hi Chrissy

The first ever complaint ;D but I don't understand your problem  ??? This Pdf map can be zoomed into and gives great detail, I have just retried it myself. (instructions from the resource forum)

After many requests I have modified the original posting and have removed all aerial shots. It still needs some work doing on it but here is the first version.

This file is not hosted by Rootschat.com as it is a 16meg Pdf - Link at the bottom of this posting

Notes

It is a free to download.

I have now paid for bandwidth usage, so you will not get adverts popping up on your screen.

If you have any plans which are not in this Pdf please let me know via PM.

The plans are all different sizes and some look very small, but you can zoom in on them. The best way to use these is to open the Graphics Select Tool in Adobe Reader, and copy to a word document for ease of printing

********************************************************************

Anybody else having problems with the file?
