Title: Which John DUNSTAN? COMPLETED
Post by: Bassworm on Thursday 06 August 09 10:39 BST (UK)
Hi All,

My family has an ancestor, a stone mason called John Dunstan (b. c1865 in Wendron, son of another John Dunstan) who married Eliza Moyle (also b. c1865, daughter of Thomas Moyle)  on 6th May 1885 in Redruth.

I'm having a real problem tracking down which John Dunstan he actually is, as there were several Johns born around the same time in that area. Any thoughts on how I can eliminate the numerous 'wrong' Johns please?

The family moved to South Wales sometime before WW1, where John was a stone mason in the mining industry.

Any help would be much appreciated.
Many thanks,
Mike.

Hi Mike,
Firstly 1891 Census has him as John.W.Dunstan so that is a help ;)

I am unable to Find John W Dunstan, born 1865 with Father John  in 1871/1881 Censuses.
BUT, have found a contender, a stone mason, living with Mother Clarinda and siblings 1881. Interestingly he has a sister Beatrice, which I noticed John named one of his daughters on 1891 Census.

Possibility?

Trish

1871 Census
Rame, Wendron, Cornwall
RG10/2300/69/16

Clarinda DUNSTAN, head, mar, 25, stone masons wife, born Wendon
JOHN.W., son, 7, scholar
Eliza.J, 6, daug
Roletta , son, 4
Ellen, daug, 3

Next door, James OPIE, 58, stone mason and wife Phillipa Opie, 56, born Wendron/Mabe

Marriage;
John DUNSTONE
June 1863
Helston 5c 317
On same page Clarinda OPIE ;D

1881 if you dont have census access you can search for yourself on Familysearch, Clarinda Dunstan, 1846, Wendron

1891 Clarinda is still alone, a Widow. Roleta and Caroline are still at home. Good sign as John W. if he is yours is married by now. :D
RG12/1839/88/5

Possible Death;
John Keam DUNSTAN
June 1886
Redruth 5c 192
Age 41

Ok 41yrs in 1886, born c 1845, dies after John and Eliza marry, so would be listed as living on Marriage Cert. Dies before Clarinda is listed as Widow in 1891 census.

Maybe he never appears with Clarinda as he away working all the time . He seems to be around enough to father several children though ;D
I will try to find him alone later. he could be under Dunstan/Dunstone/Dunston etc so make take time.

There is a possible birth for John jnr 1863;
John William DUNSTAN
September 1863
Helston 5c 228
Or he could be reg. just under John

Cheers,
Trish

I originally automatically put Roletta down as a girl on 1871 census ;D
Lucky the other one was around long enough to Father John in  1839/1840 ;)

Yup, so did I when I was making notes. Thought it should have been Rosetta, until I read his occupation.

Blimey, I didn't expect so many replies in such a short time. What a fantastic bunch you are.

I'm going away tomorrow for a week, so I'll look into all these leads when I get back. Many thanks for all that great info.

Mike.

Damn, you lot are good!

Ordered some certs just before I went on holiday;

John William Dunstan, b. 05 Aug 1863 in Rame, Wendron. Son of John Dunstan, Stonemason and Clarinda Dunstan, formerly Opie.

John Snr and Clarinda's marriage cert spells their name as Dunstone (John couldn't write anyway so he certainly wouldn't have noticed). Fathers listed as Roletta Dunstan (Deceased, occupation Miner) and James Opie (occupation stonemason).

My next task is to track down when and where John William Dunstan died. He married Eliza Moyle in 1885 and sometime after 1908 they moved to Deri in South Wales, where Eliza died in 1912. John is listed as deceased on my grandmothers marriage cert in 1930 but as yet I can't find his death, certainly not in Deri anyway.

how about this one?

John W Dunstan 49 dec qtr 1912 Bridgend vol 11a pg 891

there's a baptism for a Roletta Dunstan in Stithians, son of John & Elizabeth,  13/3/1807, IGI batch C053252. Possible marriage for the parents 23/4/1804 same parish, Elizabeth's surname being Oppy. But Dunstan is a pretty common name in the area so copy parish entries from the record office in Truro would look to be a good idea.

Also, there's an opc for Stithians

Yep, I had found that death notice already, but hadn't investigated it yet as there's nothing in the family history that ties us to Bridgend. Time to order a death cert I think.

Thanks for the link to the Stithians OPC, that's a handy little resource I'd not come across before.

Well, the death cert proves he's the right John. Sadly it looks like he spent the last three years of his life in the County Asylum, Bridgend. His cause of death is listed as 'General paralysis of the insane'. Which I suppose means that Eliza had to cope with losing her husband to the asylum, and having three of her children die in the space of three years, before dying herself in 1912, several months before John died. Tragic stuff.
