Title: Thurban/Thorburn - Exeter
Post by: treeve on Tuesday 01 March 05 12:42 GMT (UK)
I am looking for the family of James Thurban in Devon.
They seem to have been in Devon for a matter of a few years.

James Thurban's family can be traced in Mousehole and Penzance ( Cornwall )
right to the present. But his first appearance is in the 1851 Devon Census at 11 Willow Street
Plymouth. Recorded as James  THURBIN - Lodger, unmarried, aged 26, a Shoe Maker
Journeyman, born Exeter-DEVON. He later shows in the 1871 Census Parish MOUSEHOLE, as
James THURBAN, aged 38, a CORDWAINER born  EXETER, Devonshire.

I have found
GEORGINA JILL THURBAN  ( note – same names as James’ daughter in Mousehole )
Christened  26 OCT 1829   Saint Mary Arches, Exeter daughter of  ROBERT THURBAN and ANN
and
ANN THURBAN  married  EDWARD ELLIS PENDER 10 MAR 1834   Saint Mary Arches, Exeter.

According to the marriage registry entry  23 OCT 1865   Madron, Cornwall,
JAMES THURBAN was  34;  he married CATHERINE CHIRGWIN ( 20 ) .
He died  Dec 1879 Thurban James ( 51 )   Penzance 5c 193  which suggests he was born 1828.
His son ( James Henry Thurban born Jun 1871 -Penzance )  died Sep 1892  East Stonehouse  5b 174

Any ideas and help will be very welcome
Best Wishes   :) :)

I am interested in this family too. Robert THURBAN was the first husband of my gt gt gt grandmother, Ann GILL. They were married on 15 September 1825 at St Stephens in Exeter.

So far I have traced two children from Robert and Ann's marriage:
Georgina Gill THURBAN, chr. 26 October 1829 at St Mary Arches, Exeter, and
James THURBAN, b. 1831? in Exeter.

I am actually descended from Ann and her second husband, Edward ELLIS, whom she married on 10 March 1834 at St Mary Arches, Exeter, following Robert's death. The birth certificate for one of their children [my gt gt grandfather, Edward ELLIS jr, b. 18 April 1839] gives his mother's name as "Ann ELLIS, late THURBAN, formerly GILL".

Edward ELLIS sr was born in Paul, Cornwall - although he and Ann lived in Exeter for a while, and also in London [where one of their sons, George, was born in 1842], before returning to West Cornwall sometime prior to the 1851 census. I'm guessing that the whole family [including stepchildren Georgina and James THURBAN] would be recorded on the 1841 census for London, although I haven't been able to prove this as yet.

Edward [Pender] ELLIS was a shoemaker - which is presumably why James THURBAN took up that profession. My gt gt grandfather, Edward ELLIS jr also ran a boot and shoe shop in Penzance in the 1870s and 1880s.

I have traced 5 children from James THURBAN's marriage to Catherine CHIRGWIN: Robert, Georgina Gill, James Henry, Annie Jane and William. The family was living at Keigwin Square, Mousehole in 1881 and 1891.

Hope this is of interest. I'd be keen to hear how it fits in with your own research.

Best wishes,

 :)

Hello and thank you for your reply ....
my interest is for a friend, who wondered where
the family came from ... and it seems they were related
in some way to a family with greater connections.
I'll get back to you shortly on all of this ....
Certainly your research fits in nicely with my own.
Best Wishes
Raymond
