Title: Mary Russell - Thornliebank Scotland
Post by: velly on Tuesday 04 August 09 07:47 BST (UK)
Hello,

I am looking for a birth record for Mary Russell who was born in Thornliebank Scotland in approximately 1842.  Her parents are recorded on her death certificate as Marian Caddens and George Russell.

I've searched Scotland's People for her birth, their marriage and also in the census records but with no luck.  However, I'm not the biggest expert around so I'm not suggesting that's conclusive  ;)

Any assistance much appreciated.  I hope that this is the right board and my Scottish geography is sound.  :)

Hi Vickki  :)

On the death cert does it say Marian  Russell M.S Caddens or just Marian Caddens. If it doesn't use the M.S., the Marian and George were probably not married.

In that case mary might have gone by her mother's surname for part of the time. You could try looking in the  the censuses under both names.

Thornliebank was in Renfrewshire but not that far from Lanarkshire.

I'll have a look on the censuses for you as well.

There doesn't appear to be a baptism record or a marriage record.

It could be that the family were not Church of Scotland and the children were baptized under a different faith.

There were different forms of marriage in Scotland and the only ones that are easily available are those performed by a Church of Scotland minister and entered in the Old Parish Records (OPRs) and, even then, not all the records are still available - missing, destroyed, not entered, etc.

Could you give Mary's death date and place and,  if she married, her married surname, please.

It will make it easier to trace her on the other censuses.

Hi Gadget,

Thanks for your unearthing. Is it not unusual to find her mother appearing as Mary instead of Marian?

Her death date: 19 November 1924  place: Newton, Auckland, New Zealand.  Her married name was Gordon (she married John Thomas Gordon on 25 December 1871).

Thanks so much.

I'm not having much luck finding deaths for George and Mary/Marion at the moment.

Did Mary marry in Scotland or New Zealand and when did she emmigrate?

Mary married in NZ in 1871.  Her death cert states she was in NZ for 60 years which would mean she emigrated in approx. 1864.

She must have still been in Scotland in 1861, if that's he case, but so far I'm not having much luck finding her, her parents or William, Agnes and Margaret  :-\

I'm not sure how good the ships lists are at that time to check whether it was just Mary who came out  or whether she came with other family members.

I don't see a baptism for her mother in Maybole circa 1813 either. What religion was Mary?

I don't know for sure what religion Mary was.  However, her son George Martin Gordon was Presbyterian.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Vikki, George Russell and Mary (Cadden), are my direct GGGGfather and mother. I have been looking for info on them for years, I have bits that have been mentioned here, but did not know that Mary (junior) got married and died in New Zealand. Can you let me know some more please.

The last I know of George and Mary is the 1851 census in Scotland, they then seem to have disappeared.

Thank you

Hi Alex,

I haven't looked at this for quite some time.  However, Mary Russell married John Thomas Gordon on 25 December 1871 - they were married in 'the dwelling house of Mrs J Wallis' in Auckland.  I didn't obtain her death certificate - but have a record of (who I think is her) burial record  that states Mary Gordon was 82 years old when she died on 19 November 1924 and is buried in Purewa Cemetery.

I couldn't find anything on when she left Scotland - name of ship, port etc - or when she arrived in NZ.

If you find anything further, I'd appreciate you sharing.

Best of luck

Vickki

P.S.  have you gone any further back than George Russell & Mary(Marian) Caddens?  Do you have their marriage date/place? Thanks so much, Vickki

Hi Vickki, I have some info about different people in the family tree. I have a document which I will attach for you in that it is not a marriage certificate but a document to say George and Mary will be married. I went to Scotland 11 years ago and met a second cousin Alastair and his wife Sheila who still live in Montrose, he gave me some info of the Russell family.

Are you just interested in George and Mary or more Russell family??

Can I ask are you a Russell??

Thanks

Alex

Sorry Vickki will try again with the attachments. Once again the attachments wont go through, says its to large.

If you want I will give you my e-mail so you verify me, and if you are comfortable to give me your e-mail I can send several documents and photos of several Russells.

I don't have anything earlier for George or mary except that George was born in Ireland in 1803 and Mary in Ayr in 1813 and both married in 14 July 1837. Am still trying to get more all the time.

Hi Alex,

My email is vickki_elliott@bigpond.com

I am not a Russell, I was a Gordon prior to marriage - Mary Russell (via her marriage to John Thomas Gordon) is my GG Grandmother.  So it's only really George Russell & Mary/Marian Caddens that are relevant for me...

Thanks so much
