I am in need of help to find my g.grandfather in censuses prior to 1881. He was married 6 times, which comlicates things.
His name was Thomas Moss , born about 1817 in Lamberwood Green, Wigan. I believe he stayed in the area all his life.
In 1841 and 1851 I think he was married to Susannah, born c.1820 in Wigan.
In 1861 I think his wife's name was Ann, born c.1836 in Wigan.
In 1871 he was married to Esther, born c.1835 in West Houghton, Lancs.
It would be helpful if you could tell me the names of any children, so that I can hopefully sort ut who belongs to who!
I would be so grateful if anyone can trace him.

Hi,
Many thanks, everyone. Sorry I'm only just replying -we had a small family crisis.
Mo, I'm sure you have the correct family. My grandfather's name was Joseph and the age fits. Also I know he was born in Aspull.
Thanks, John, for the marriage of Thomas and Esther. Do you know whereabouts in Wigan St. George's is/was?
Dotty, that marriage to Susannah would mean he would appear with her on the 1841 and 1851 census. It would be great if someone could find her.
Thanks again, Margaret

This Thomas was not married to Ann in 1861, it was Dorothy (Fletcher probably) !!!
1861
Wigan RG9/2772 Folio 16 Page 26
Thomas Moss Head M 42 Engineer Pemberton Lancs
Dorothy do Wife M 39 Ince Lancs
Margaret do Daur U 21 Factory Opp Orrell Lancs
Ann do Daur 19 Factory Opp Orrell Lancs

Mary do Daur 14 Scholar Pemberton Lancs
Ellen do Daur 10 Scholar Pemberton Lancs
Willow Trees, Whelley
*It says Margaret but I think it should have been Margery
I cannot immediately see any conclusive evidence to prove that this Thomas and the one that Mo found in 1871 are the same person .... but he seems to be the most likely candidate based on the census entries that are available.

Thanks again. I can now start to sort out the children. I didn't relise he had so many. I am descended from his last marriage (Esther) and he had another 4 with her.
Family tradition says he was married 6 times, so maybe there are another 2 wives somewhere!
John, I will have a look where Tyldesley is and maybe can find more clues.

Here he is again with another wife, Jane Atherton (nee ?)
1891
Wigan RG12/3051 Folio 6 Page 5
Thomas Moss Head M 74 Farm Labourer Lancashire Pemberton
Jane do Wife M 49 Lancashire Pemberton

Joseph do Son S 20 Coal Miner Lancashire Aspull

John do Son S 16 Coal Miner Lancashire Pemberton
William do Son S 14 Coal Miner Lancashire Pemberton
Ellen do Daur S 10 Scholar Lancashire Skelmersdale

The last four listed children came with Jane. The others link back to the 1871 and 1881 census entries for Thomas and Esther. Jane can also been seen with her previous husband, Thomas Atherton, on the 1881 census living in Skelmersdale.

Yes St George's is still there. You can find a photo of it on matthewsramblers.homestead.com/WiganPhotos.html
Also on the Wiganworld site in the 1869 directory for Aspull which would have covered Whelley it shows a Thomas Moss ,grocer and beer seller.
I think possibly on the posts that there are two different Thomas Moss I may be wrong.

Hello
The four marriages that we have mentioned above, for Thomas Moss are ...
1838 (3rd quarter) to Susannah Cartwright at All Saints, Wigan
1855 (3rd quarter) to Dorothy Fletcher at All Saints, Wigan
1868 (13th January) to Esther Mawdesley at St George, Wigan
1887 (4th quarter) to Jane Atherton at St Catherine, Wigan
If it were possible for someone in Wigan to check the registers for these marriages to ascertain if the same father is specified for Thomas on each occasion, it should help to determine if all the census entries refer to the same man or to more than one man.
A more expensive option would be to purchase some of the actual certificates. If the 1838 and the 1887 marriages have the same father for Thomas, then it is almost certain that those in between will be the same.

I've just realised that I am still missing the 1841 census (wife Susannah). If anyone could find it, it would be great.
Thanks again, Margaret

Hi Margaret,
I am certain I am researching the same family as yourself, via the children of Joe Moss and Agnes Keegan. I am extremely confused by Thomas Moss and all of his marriages. Can you help? :) Cheers,
David
