Title: Bermondsey Buildings - help please!
Post by: kimb on Sunday 02 August 09 07:39 BST (UK)
I am trying to trace the location of "Bermondsey Buildings" which would have been somewhere in the parish of St Mary Magdalen.

My great grandfather x 4 Henry Bishopp lived at 1, Bermondsey Buildings from 1851 until his death in 1873. The fact that he lived in one place for over 23 years is a first in my family history and I am intrigued to find out more about the dwelling! I am assuming the residence was somewhere within the leather/hatter district around where London Bridge station is now. Another first [and only] for the Bishopps is the fact that Henry had a servant - does this mean he was a successful Currier? Doesn't seem to fit the norm me thinks!

If anyone has any information about this area - I would really appreciate the insight!

Many thanks

Kim

Many thanks Valda!

How simple!!!???

I did try googgling but I think that I must have put too much info into the search criteria! Typical of me!

Thanks again!

Hi Kim,

See the extract from the 1872 OS map below:

Bermondsey Buildings (marked in red) was just off of Bermondsey Road, (laterly Bermondsey New Road, now Tower Bridge Road). St Mary Magdalen (the parish church for Bermondsey) is at the top of the map. If you read the above link and look at Booths map he classified the street then (1898/99) as dark blue (Very poor, casual. Cronic want). There had been little change by the time of the 1914 map except for the local trams and the Guinness Trust buildings having been built not far away.

Further to the above, if you want to virtually see the area as it is today. Google map to Tower Bridge Road and half way between The George (on the corner of Leroy Street) and Presto Pizza's (corner of Aberdour Street) is a bus stop (marked BJ) where the entrance to Bermondsey Buildings once was. If you look to the East from this spot or from Presto's you can see the council flats (Creasy Estate) that was built over the area between the wars.
