Hello,
I've been trying to research my mothers fathers side of the family (Monaghan) from County Galway for a while now unfortunately I've been stumped at almost every turn I've taken.
My grandfather was :-
Thomas Patrick Monaghan
Born: 8th Sept 1921, Shantalla, County Galway
Died: 14th Aug 1996, Falkirk, Stirlingshire, Scotland
The information I have from a few documents passed on before my grandfather died on his parents is as follows:
Father
Fergus Monaghan
Born: abt 1894, County Galway
Died: 22nd Jan 1964, Manchester, Lancashire, England
Mother
Ellen Hynes
Children
Thomas Patrick Monaghan
Born: 8th Sept 1921, Shantalla, County Galway
Died: 14th Aug 1996, Falkirk, Stirlingshire, Scotland
Patrick Monaghan
Born: 11th May 1923, County Galway
Died: 11th June 1981, Manchester, Lancashire, England
* There may have been other brothers and sisters that I do not know of.
Fergus Monaghan was with the Royal Horse Artillary during WW1. I have a medal card from the national archives at Kew with his Regt No. 31593 on it. He then lived in Shantalla when my grandfather was born in 1921.
Does anyone have any hints or tips on researching or does anyone know the names above?
Thanking you for taking the time to read my message. Hopefully some small piece of information is forthcoming.

If you haven't tried already...the place to start is the Irish Civil Index on familysearch at - http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#c=1408347;p=2;t=searchable
I would start by looking for the marriage of Fergus and Ellen - this looks to be the best match :
Record type: Marriage
Name: Fergus Monaghan
registration district: Galway
quarter/year: Apr - Jun 1921
volume: 4/page: 139
this matches with an index record for an Ellen Hynes (same district, quarter, volume & page)
You can order a research cert using this information from the GRO - see www.groireland.ie The marriage cert will give you fathers name etc.
I don't see a promising match for the birth of Fergus but I wonder if that was his full birth name or a name he was known by...

Hi Shane,
Thanks for the info. I hadn't tried that website you provided! It may be the correct year of marriage as my grandfather Thomas Patrick Monaghan was born on Sept 21st 1921 and was the eldest of the children.
On the forename front, he's called Fergus Monaghan on my grandfathers birth certificate and on the WW1 medal record I have for him yet on the three or four pieces of paperwork I have on his time with the Royal Horse & Field Artillary during WW1 he's down as Ferguson Monaghan! Strange!
Thanks for the information and where to get a copy of the certificates. All the best!

The members of my mother's family I was looking for info on are unfortunately no longer with us, I understand though about naming my grandathers possible brothers and sisters if there are any on a public forum as I don't know if they may still be with us.
Thanks for the info! I'll remember to be careful.

the 1911 census data for Co. Galway is available on line on the National Archives at : http://census.nationalarchives.ie
I don't see any sign of Fergus but there are a few possibilities for Ellen Monaghan.

Hi MIGKY :)
Thanks for the info. I have Roman Catholic mass cards for G-Grandfather Fergus and my grandathers brother Patrick, with the dates of death and a colour photo of the heradstone with both on it.
Thanks for taking a look at the books to see if there any Monaghans in those.
Thanks again!

Just a wee note to thank everyone for the info. I eventually found out the info I was looking for.
Fergus Monaghan was in the birth register for Galway St. Nicholas as "Farrell Monaghan", that's why I could find no register for Fergus Monaghan!
Thanks again for everyone's help!

Did you ever get any further with your Monaghans in Ireland?
I have a Mary Monaghan from Galway in my tree born c1821 (give or take a decade - ::)). She married a man name Darcy/D'arcy and they had two children in the 1840's (Mary and Ann). But I think he must've died (can't imagine a divorce somehow) and she married a Thomas Berry and moved to Liverpool c1850 where they had 3 more daughters. She died in Liverpool in 1885.
I can't get back further with my Monaghans, so I'd be interested in any suggestions you might have.
Regards
Ann
