Title: Dublin 1851 census
Post by: williamscdr on Friday 31 July 09 09:08 BST (UK)
Morning All

Does anyone have access to the Deblin 1851 census (which google tells me has been transcribed) to help find Digges in Dublin:

Here's hoping

the Dublin Census 1851 is an extract of heads of households for Dublin City area only (roughly the area bounded by the two canals). These are the Diggs entries :

  West D .Digges,31 Seville Place
Hy. Diggs, 50 Gardiner St. Lower
  Joseph Diggs, 43 Bride St.
Rob. Diggs, 13 Oriel St. Upper

There is no 1851 census for Dublin. The so called "census" refers to Griffith's Valuation listing occupiers of houses and land at the time. There are no details of household members, beyond the name of the head of household.

The data mentioned comes from an extract created for Dublin City from the actual 1851 census before it was destroyed, it's not the same as Griffiths.

edit :

there's more info about it at this

it is not mentioned much, and I only heard of myself in the last year or two. But it is very useful as it includes occupants of tenements etc which Griffiths and Thom's directory do not.

Thanks

National Archives, Dublin-
"A list of names of heads of household in the returns of 1851 for Belfast City and Dublin City can be consulted in the Reading Room as can the 1851 Dublin City Census, Chart's Index of Heads of Household CD-ROM compiled and edited by Seán Magee (Eneclann, 2001)."

Here's details about the CD-
http://www.eneclann.ie/acatalog/ENEC003.html
Please do not ask for a lookup from this CD as their terms & conditions state "The data on our products is supplied for information and personal research only." "
