Post by: missjo123 on Sunday 02 May 04 10:03 BST (UK)
Hiya

How much does it cost to apply for a birth certificate.

I was given the address of where to get this from with an amount of £7,  well i posted this about 10 days ago, only to receive it back friday,  saying the amount is not enough.

HI Josie,
Yes it is £7 if you supply the GRO index. If you go to the link  below you  will find all you need to know. If you live in the UK you can order online. Hope this may help. Kind Regards, Frances

HI Josie,
I am wondering where you sent your request as ordered a certificate on 7 April, online, and paid £7 as usual and had no problems. The link I gave you still gives the same prices as then.

You appear to have the full index reference required for applying for a certificate. Maybe in naming the mother they will charge for checking this, I am not sure on this point.

May I suggest that you either apply online if you are in the UK or download the form and try again quoting just what you found in the index.

Hope this helps, Frances

Did you order from the local register office ?  if so the Gro Ref won't be any use - however with the info you supplied they should still be able to find the Cert.  maybe they wanted a bit extra for postage ?  If it was a local office try giving them a ring to see.

Hi

If you apply by post the fee is £8.50

It costs £7.00 to order online.

See:-   http://www.statistics.gov.uk/registration/CertE_W/fees.asp

The above page details all fees and ordering details for Birth, Marriage and Death certificates.
(Always order a full certificate as more details will be shown)

You can apply for a copy certificate at the 'local' area register office if you have the address but its much easier to apply to the national office in Southport.
In my experience it usually takes between 2 - 4 weeks after applying  to receive a copy certificate.

Looks as though you supplied full GRO (General Register Office) details but, I think you must have applied by post. (Unless you are in UK I don't think you can currently order online anyway).

regards,

SKIPPY

I have always ordered my certs from the local record office (superintendant registrar), and have to date had no problems. Some take longer than others, but this is dependent of the number of staff. The one I use most only works mornings 4 days a week, so it does take a bit longer.

Before I order, I always phone first to check cost etc. Some offices ask for an SAE which is a problem for me, living in Germany. Some of them then ask for an additional 50 p or whatever to cover postage. Others just laugh and say its OK. I haven't ordered on line as yet, as I find the personal touch brings significant advantages with it. I only pay 7 pounds!

The advantage with the personal touch is that once they get to know you, they will be more willing to do a few extras, extend a search a bit etc. So long as you don't abuse it.

When ordering certificates, I provide all the info I have pertaining to the application, incl. parents names, or childrens names if its a death cert. By doing this, and adding a qualifying statement such as on a  marriage cert "if the brides father is not called such and such,  I do not require the certificate." I have to date not received any wrong certs. Granted this is not so easy if parents a siblings names are not known.

When ordering certificates online from
http://www.statistics.gov.uk/

you must actually live in the UK, not just get them posted to a relative living there to save (insert pound sign here as not on an Australian keyboard)1.50 as i tried but the address that the certificates get sent to must match the address the credit card company has for you. But you don't actually find this out until you have already put in all your certificate details and get to the paying section :(

That's the correct address for ordering certificates now.  Maybe it's been established since 04 when the post were posted.   the price just went up recently as well to £9.25.
