Can any one help me to decipher the Brides Fathers given name, also a Witness to which I think they could be the same person
Thanks in advance

Not very clear is it on either, I've stared at it too long at the late end of the day here
Thought I might throw Hart or Kent in as my view :-\
( and I can't even make out the surname! ... is the groom's surname Rice? as I was tossing up something beginning with H, K or R)

Hi Mourne,
I think it says Thos Carr
:)

See I knew I should have left it to someone with experience at recognising the tricky ones Tati ;) and once you've said that now ::)

I don't ever remember seeing abbreviations on certificates.
The first letter looks like capital H & the last like t. I will look on the censuses for a Carr [got the surnames from your .jpg title] ; at least he was a bootmaker & not a labourer!!

I would say that the bride's father and the witness name do seem to be the same. Is the bride Ann Carr?
-
Sometimes it helps to negativise the image ...

Carr is very clear :D especially now that I know! and I must say that Thomas goes much nicer with it than the options I thought of!!
-
What awful writing! I can't make out Thos.
I'm leaning more towards Karl Carr or if he's Welsh "Huel" Carr

Does it look like it could be this family? Although no Ann.
1841 census:
Union Place, Stepney, Mile End Old Town, Lower, Tower Hamlets
Thomas [transcribed on findmypast as CARN] 45 cordwainer
Mary 40
William 15 shoemaker app[rentice]
Elizabeth 15
James 10
Mary 10
John 5
George 5
Henry 2
Robert 1 mo

Do you know the forename of the other witness? It's a pity there is not another capital T anywhere to compare. But I can see the h & o & a tall s if the first letter is capital T. There is a capital H on the registrar's name - Harrison - although this looks written by a different person to the rest of the certificate.

I think I have answered my own question!!! Looks like the witness was William's mother Hannah.
I found the Rice family in 1841 in Dalgleish St Limehouse [as I am sure you have]:
William 45 Blacksmith
Hannah 45 Ind
William 15 cabinet maker
Jane 13
none of them born in county
HO 107/701/7/16
So the forename of the other witness does not begin with H. FWIW I go with Thos.

Could it, with any stretch of the imagination, be 'Ricd.' - abbreviation for 'Richard'?

Hello to you all
Thank you all for taking the time to look at my posting, I have found the Rice family with Hannah. also the other family Thomas & Jane.Carr. Have looked until I have square eye's, I thought it could be Herb, I suppose it could be a middle name or just a name to which he was known, any thoughts on this one?.
The 1841 census with Thomas and Mary is a good possibility as Ann could be living away from home and in service. Thomas being a cordwainer which is a Bootmaker.
Will look on the early Census to see names of bootmakers with surname Carr.
I also found on IGI an Ann Carr parents Bengamin & Elizabeth
