Title: Buswell
Post by: Les275 on Tuesday 28 July 09 20:23 BST (UK)
My great grandfather Robert Buswell was born in Pimlico around 1840. I have his army records from the National Archives . also from the 1851 and 1861 census . My problem is that I cannot find a birth marriage or death certificte for him. He was married in Edinburgh around 19870 and died between the 1891 and 1901 census in Scotland. No sign of him in either the English records or on Scotland's peopl. Any advice would be gratefully received.
cheers

Hi Les

How do you know that he was born in Pimlico?

There is a Robert Buswell in the births index, Jul-Sep 1839 Brixworth 15 222, but Brixworth is in Northamptonshire.

All the best

This doesn't answer your question, but do you have these details for the eldest child with Robert & his wife in Glasgow in 1891 (namely Robert, 18 b Devonport)?

Birth Sep qtr 1872

Stoke Damerel  5b 300

& from IGI:

ROBERT ARTHUR BURTON BUSWELL

Baptised:  29 September 1872

The 1881 census (Glasgow) shows that Robert and Jessie/Janet had a daughter before they had Robert, namely Mary Ann (10 b England in 1881).

Her likely birth:

Birth Sep qtr 1870

Buswell  Mary Ann J
Farnham  2a 90

Have you got "Jennet" and Mary Ann in Aldershot in the 1871 census? RG10/817/44/23.

Does the information as to the date/place of the marriage (1870, Edinburgh) come from one of the children's birth certificates?

And what is the source of the information that he died in Scotland?

No did not have that but that would be logical as he was still in the army - have these children later in the 1881 census in Glasgow. Thank you will check that out

Childrens birth places came from the census - wedding date and place is family folklore - he is said to have been married in Edinburgh castle by his commanding ofiicer before leaving with his regiment

source of info that he died in Scotland is verbal - he disappears between the 1891 and 1901 census and one of his daughters told me in the 60s that he died in 1892

Hi Les

You mentioned in a PM that Robert and his family were living in Lower Shadwell at the time of the 1851 census. HO 107/1550 441 p3 shows the folllowing family living at 7 Lower Shadwell in St Paul Shadwell:
Thos Buswell Head M 59 Cooper (Journeyman) b Herts, Aldenham
Catherine do Wife M 44 - b. City of London, Blackfriars
Catherine A daur 12
Robert son 10
John Thos son 1 mo
All three children b Middlesex, Shadwell.

The births of the three children were registered in Stepney but under the name Busswell:
Births Jan-Mar 1839 Busswell Catherine Ann Stepney 2 461
Births Oct-Dec 1840 Busswell Robert William Stepney 2 486
Births Jan-Mar 1851 Busswell John Thomas Stepney 2 635

My problem with this Robert Buswell is that he is clearly born in Shadwell in the East end of London and not in Pimlico which is in the West end of London.

All the best

Hi Les

I have traced the Shadwell Robert Buswell in the 1861 and 1871 censuses and I do not think that he is your ancestor:

1861 RG 9/280 23 p21 (St George in the East, St Paul) living with his parents and brother John
Robert Buswell 20 Druggist's Porter b Middlesex, Shadwell

1871 RG 10/532 49 p35 (St George in the East)
Robert Busswell Head M 30 Druggist Assistan b. Shadwell, Middlesex
Elizabeth do Wife M 25 - b. St George E
Arthur ? do son 4 - b. do
Elizabeth ? do daur 2 - b. do

Freebmd has the following index entries:

Marriages Apr-Jun 1865 Buswell Robert William Shoreditch 1c 477
(probable bride Brown Elizabeth Euphemia)

Births Jan-Mar 1867 Busswell Arthur Robert St Geo East 1c 443
Births Apr-Jun 1869 Busswell Elizabeth Catherine St Geo East 1c 381

In 1881 (RG 11/400 15 p24)
Robert Busswell, druggist assistant and his family (six children) are living at 54 Huntingdon Street, St Leonards Shoreditch.

All the best
