On my Calderdale Companion website, I have entries for Halifax residents Luigi de Luca and Annunziata de Luca. In 1897, Annunziata married Michele Pandozi. All 3 people were involved with the ice cream industry. Luigi [or Lewis] was active in the 1930s.
Questions: (1) Can anyone link Luigi and Annunziata (2) Can anyone give me any dates for any of the people? (3) Are other members of the family listed in censuses etc? (4) Have I spelled their names correctly?
Thanks in advance

A bit more .........
Carmine and Antonio are both married and living in Halifax in 1911 - sorry I haven't got any credits to look at the transcripts.
Jane and Louis/Luigi have a daughter Domenica in 1917. Transcribed as Del Lucs Donenica on FreeBMD.

And more........
Can't see any of them on any census before 1901, or a birth registration for Philip. Wonder if he really was born in Halifax!

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to unearth all those names. I didn't realise we had so many ice-cream makers in Halifax.

Hi all. And welcome to Rootschat, Jill and Chris. I don't have anything to add to the discussion but a question.
I didn't expect to see Italian immigrants being discussed on the West Riding board. But being of Italian ancestry on my father's side (his parents emigrated to the U.S.), I'm very curious about the Italian experience in the U.K. In this particular case, I'm wondering if anyone knows where Luigi De Luca came from in Italy.
De Lucas emigrated from my ancestral village of Montenerodomo, Abruzzi and went to the U.S., and places like Canada, Belgium, and (I believe) Australia. I know the name is not rare as Italian names go. The Ellis Island website has a few hundred De Lucas coming into the U.S., and they could have originated in many places. But I had to ask if De Lucas could also have gone to the U.K. from my village. And even if they came from another town, it will still be interesting information to have.
And thank you, Malcolm, for your ever-useful Calderdale Companion.
Regards e buona fortuna a tutti.

Hi Malcolm, my great granddad was also an ice cream seller in halifax too, he was Pietro (Peter) Dagostino. I've been told that there was a story about him in the Courier many years ago but I'm yet to find it.
Do you know anything about him?
-
As I say on the Main Index page of my website, all I know about anything is what you see on my Calderdale Companion. So there’s no more that I can tell you about the Dagostino family right now.
I shall create a new entry for Pietro Dagostino. If you know or discover anything about him, please let me know and I shall add your contribution at the next update.

Hi Ive just joined
Luigi was my great grandad, his daughter Maria Annunciata Luccia DeLuca married my Grandad Ashton
My dad was born at 13a Woolshops on 13.11.1928. and was the eldest of eleven. He was George Lewis Ashton and died of colon cancer, like his mum and all her brothers and sisters. - so did most of my dads brothers and sisters.
My dad did tell me Luigi lost the ice cream business in a game of cards to someone called Kendal.
I have only just started my research and am keen to further any information. I am in contact with the Fusco family and hope to contact lots more unknown relatives.

Hi Richard
Welcome to Rootschat! I'm fascinated to hear Luigi lost his ice cream business to someone called Kendal! I remember Kendall's icecream very well.
They had a shop on the corner at Hipperholme crossroads when I was a child, and the icecream was made up Denholmegate Road in Hipperholme, past the grammar school and the pub. We often went to both places, you could get it to take away at the place where they made it. In fact, I think it's still there!

Hi Anne and everybody
thank you for your reply,
According to my Mum (she is 82) when Luigi married Jane Elizabeth Dean she was thought to be marrying beneath herself and her family denounced her. Also her family lived at Ashday Hall Southoweram but I cannot find their names in its history unless they were servants. She was apparently buried in a family grave at the church at SOuthoweram, next time I am up that way I am going to search. The family has suffered with the blight of something we now know as Polyposis Coli which develops into cancer of the colon, I myself have been investigated for this along with many of my Sheffield based cousins. Much more is known about this now and Gene testing determines if someone is susceptible to it or not. A chap called Professor Rodgers at Northern General did a family study as it decimated my Grandmas generation and My Dads generation. the condition is less prevalent in my generation as several of us don't have the rogue Gene but several do. Life expectancy is normally no more than 50. I have lost at least two cousins in their 40's to this already and others have had ops. The Prof asked me about my family tree but this was years ago. So you see we have featured in medical research .
The oldest living relative I know of is my Dads sister my Aunt Jane who is 79?, she was one of the first to prove negative to the Gene. My dad was born at 13a Woolshops Halifax, where Luigi made his ice cream. I note the oldest Delucas I know about, My great great Grandma and Grandad lived till at least 63 and 57 she being 9 years older than he. I am searching for records of their deaths.
regards
Richard

Hi there ... My name is Lauren Wood and Annie Raphaela Tunstra De Luca was my great grandmother, I know one of her sisters was Lucia, and there was Domenica (Dora) and there were numerous brothers (Jack, Trevor, Francesco father to my auntie Pat my late grandmothers cousin). I have a copy of the family tree somewhere if you are interested
-
Hi Malcolm
I got your message and I can give you as much detail as I can. Luigi De Luca (Villa Latina, Lazio, Italy) married Jane Elizabeth Ellen Dean (Brighouse). Luigi was the youngest of four children. Anunziata (aka Nancy), Antonio who died in 1944 and Carmine who died in 1976. His parents were Pasquale De Luca and Domenica Franchi (Cassino, Lazio). Luigi and Jane had a few children; my great grandmother was the eldest Annie Raphaela Tunstra, Francesco, Jack, Lucia (Lucy), Domenica (Dora) and a few more lol I can't remember all names as they are on my family tree at home, in all there are over 100 descendants of theirs
-
Hi,
Not sure if this is still of any help but Luigi De Luca was my great grandfather and his son, Francesco was my grandfather. His second wife (my grandmother) was Marie Melvin. Francesco moved to Workington, Cumbria and i think worked in the steel industry there before becoming a pub landlord. I believe his first pub was The Dolphin, a dockside pub now long gone and his last was The Miner's Arms which still exists on Guard Street. He had two daughters from his second marriage, Maureen and Francesca (my mother) who sadly died in 1980. Francesco (Frank to his mates) and Marie moved back to Halifax in the early 70s. Frank died in 1972. There's more indepth information listed on the Hindle family tree at familytreemaker.genealogy.com (a search for Luigi De Luca comes up pretty near the top of a google search).
Hope this helps fill some gaps !
