Hi Tracy
If you check out the Hugh Wallis site http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountySussex.htm#R you will see Joseph baptised on 23 March 1825 at Rusper to Joseph and Jane.
Kerry :)

Possible marriage for Joseph and Jane
20 August 1820 at Cowfold
Joseph Humphry, bachelor from Beeding
Jane Peirce spinster otp
Kerry

I think the family you are trying to trace is on the IGI too - extracted records.
It may be that Joseph Humphrey married Jane Peirce (or Peice) 20 Aug 1820
Cowfold Sussex.
A child Philip was chr 13 Nov 1820 Cowfold
Then the family appear to be baptising children in Rusper:
George 19 Oct 1823
Your Joseph chr 23 Mar 1825
Peter chr 23 Mar 1825 d 20 Apr 1825 (twin to Joseph?)
Stephen 25 Mar 1827
Jane 11 Jan 1829
Richard 17 Nov 1835
Henry 17 Dec 1837
Benjamin 22 Oct 1843
Further investigation required to ascertain if the above is the same/right family. ;)
-
I see Kerry has provided that further investigation. :)
-
Thanks Ruspie :)
The twin info is interesting :D and I will investigate further
Cheers Tracey
-
I was going to look up Joseph's parents baptisms, but as I should be at work now, I'll leave that for Ruskie.
Kerry ;D
-
Tracey, the twin thing is just a guess - people sometimes had children baptised in bulk. However in this case there is not much room to squeeze in another pregnancy. ;)
Can't see obvious birth/baptisms for Joseph and Jane on the IGI.

Genuki has this:
"NEWDIGATE, a parish in the second division of Copthorne hundred, county Surrey, 5,q, miles S. by E. of Dorking, its post town."
So I wonder if this may be a possibility?:
Joseph Humphery b 2 Jun 1798, chr 16 Dec 1798
West Street Independent, Dorking, Surrey
father Joseph Humphery
mother Sarah
-
According to SFHG baptism database
Jane Pearce baptised 25 January 1801 at Ashurst to Thomas and Mary Pearce.
sorry for butting in Ruskie ::) ;D
Kerry
-
I couldn't find a marriage for Thomas and Mary in Ashurst and I'm having trouble remembering whereabouts in West Sussex it actually is.
Every marriage in the 1790s of a Thomas of course was to a Mary!
This could be a possible
Thomas Pierce and Mary Ede botp at Cowfold on 30 April 1790.
Kerry
-
Other possibility now that I have found Ashurst is not where I thought it was (ashurstwood!) ::)
Thomas Pierce to Mary Churcher on 23 June 1794 at Washington
Both marriages from SMI
Kerry
-
I checked to see when thomas and Mary started having children in Ashurst
Ashurst baptised to Thomas and Mary Pearce
Thomas 19 July 1795
Phillip 28 May 1799
Joseph 7 March 1803
Elizabeth 9 December 1804
Harriott 11 October 1807
If they didn't have any children earlier than that, ie in Cowfold I would take the Washington marriage as probable
Kerry

No that's fine Kerry - butt away! ;D I know very little about Sussex/Surrey and have just been trying to find the most likely ones on the IGI and checking locations on google maps and checking for approx ages and birth places on the censuses. ;)

This is fun
Think I've proved it was the Cowfold marriage. There certainly are other Pearces there at the time.
Children baptised at Cowfold to Thomas and Mary Pearce
Mary Pierce 10 November 1790
Sarah 5 February 1792
Edward 6 January 1793 and in the notes box - Pauper

Oh yes, that is looking very promising Kerry. ;D
Tracey, just a quick question going back to your original query .... if you have Joseph's Australian d/c does it tell you how long he'd been in Australia? Do you know what State he went to? Do you have Joseph on the 1851 census? [It's OK, I found him as a lodger in Plumstead in 1851]
You might get a better response about the immigration if you post specifically about his immigration on the Australian board. You can always post a link to this thread for anyone who is interested and to prevent possible duplication. :)
So he came to Australia after census night 31 March 1851 and before whatever the date of his marriage was in 1854. ;)
-
With regard to the emigration to Australia, I did have a look on Ancestry but nothing was showing for this Joseph in terms of passenger lists.
Kerry
-
There might be some information at the Aussie end of his trip. :) I'm not really sure how comprehensive the passenger lists on Ancestry are.
-
Just a quick reply to you all, thank you, thankyou :)
I dont have time till later today to digest all of this info but it has given me lots of food for thought ;D
I will get back to you later with what I think fits in with my family knowledge, really cant thank you enough,
cheers Tracey :D

Hi Tracey,
Sorry I do not think this is your Joseph. I did find him in my travels when working on your Australia Thread re the family. I was not aware of this thread and I initially liked him but alas he is in UK in 1861 :'(

Just reading this thread and see he is not with his family in 1851. The nearest I can spot is a 26 year old ag lab Joseph HUMPHREY pob Risby Sussex. He is lodging at a hotel in Plumstead Kent HO107/1590 Folio 305 Page 31.
I am not familiar with Sussex but I find no such place in Sussex.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
Cheers Kris :)
-
No such place as Risby in Sussex, bets its the accent and should be Rusper.
I did have a look on the passport applications on findmypast 1851 to 1854 but nothing for our man, but if he is still in Sussex that would explain that.
Kerry
-
I don't think passports were required to travel to Australia as it was part of the Commonwealth. ;D
-
Well that explains that one then ::)
