I am trying to find the marriage of Jane Poore some time before 1874 in South Australia. Her parents were Charles Poore(Railway Worker) and Elizabeth Poore(nee Henderson). She was born in 1852 in Wiltshire before arriving in Port Adelaide in 1853.
Any help much appreciated.

No marriage for Jane POORE on SA Marriage index. There are however two marriages for the daughters of a Charles POORE - Mary Ann in 1862 and Harriett in 1873.
Why do you think the marriage was pre 1874?
http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/australia/magdalena1853.htm
I am wondering if Jane was actually Harriett Jane :-\
Cheers

Thanks Cando,
I have a letter written by Jane's mother Elizabeth in 1874 in which she states that she has"two girls married,Jane and Harriet, but my oldest son is not married yet".
I know that Harriet married Joseph Cathro and Mary Ann married Richard Hounslow but Jane is proving to be quite a mystery.
Kind regards,
Don.

Hi Don,
Sorry, I have not been able to find a trace of Jane in SA after her arrival.
You may be aware Charles is buried at Chltenham with his wife. H 48e. He died on the 11 July 1889 aged 75 years as a result of an accident on the Port Railway Line. His wife Elizabeth died 25 June 1887 aged 67 years. (There is a stone)
There was an inquest on the 12 of July 1889 on the body of Charles POORE who was knocked down by a train near Cheltenham, on the Port Railway - Verdict Accidental Death.
Cheers Kris :)

Don't know if they had other sons later than the girls and the boy mentioned above. But this burial at Cheltenham caught my eye.

Cando,
The marriage isn't over the border in Vic is it? I see the family in 1851 and Jane's birth in 1852, her arrival in 1853 and then nothing. No children born to her in SA either.
Kris :)

As far as I know the only Poore of that family who came to Victoria was George who was the son of Charles's first marriage in Downton, Wiltshire. he came to Australia on the Magdalena with his sister Mary Ann,Edward(his stepbrother and Jane(his stepsister). After arriving Charles and Elizabeth had the other children already mentioned.

I thought there may have been two marriages as I couldn't find a Charles and Elizabeth on the 1851 census only a Charles and Eliza with son George and Mary Ann. I noted a death for an Eliza POORE in 1851. However the only marriage I can find for Charles and Elizabeth HENDERSON is in Dec qtr 1852, the same quarter in which Jane's birth is registered. However this isn't finding out what happened to Jane. I wonder if her possible death may be amongst the many early registrations that are missing in SA.
Cando

You're correct Cando.I have the marriage certificates for both of Charles's marriages and the death certificate of Eliza.
Maybe the wedding wasn't registered?
Did Jane die in South Australia?
Don

Sorry to interrupt - but Cando - were there early registrations in SA that have gone missing??

I really don't wish to go into a long explanation of what I have read over the years....perhaps best explained by the newsletter on the subject of BDM in SA.
In my OH's tree we have a number of people who never had their deaths registered....I have photos of the headstone of their graves. They were in the same period and from the same registration area of SA. I naturally became interested in the subject. I think the linked newsletter gives a good overview.
http://www.jaunay.com/newsletter/newsletter30.html
I also understand that some areas in the goldfields of Victoria have bdm's that never 'made it' to the Registry in Melbourne. I guess as with all paper based records and misunderstanding of requirements by district registrars, there will be errors and omissions. I am certainly far from expert in this area, just interested.
Cheers

Thanks Cando,
I found that very interesting.

Many thanks to all who have endeavoured to trace Jane.
Your help is very much appreciated.

Don I have trawled all the Jane marriages with father Charles to 1874 in the SA Indexes...nothing. I thought there may have been a possibility that the POORE surname may have been mistranscribed.
As Kris mentioned, there are no births with a Jane POORE named as mother on the SA indexes.
I have searched in Vic, NSW and WA with nil result.
Cheers

Many thanks indeed Cando.

You're correct Cando.I have the marriage certificates for both of Charles's marriages and the death certificate of Eliza.

Dear Essie
Thanks for taking the time to add what you have.
Yes, Elizabeth had Jane (1851) before she married Charles Poore in 1852
I have an Edward Henderson as the illigitimate child of Jane before she married Charles Poore.
Edward was born in 1846 according to the 1851 Census but l have not found anything more.
Elizabeth and Charles arrived in Australia in 1853 with the children.
Charles`s two (George and Mary) from his first wife and Elizabeth`s Edward.
Does any of this ring any bells !!!
They went on to have 4 more children = Harriett, Sarah, William and Charles.
