Title: G Grandparents names please?
Post by: poptin on Saturday 25 July 09 17:24 BST (UK)
I am looking for the parents of my husband's grandad, his name is Samuel Baker and as far as I can be sure, according to freebmd, he was born in Dec 1894 and was registered in Pontefract.  I have tried looking on Ancestry.com but cannot find him.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I know he married his 1st wife in 1920 and his second in 1930.

There are two Samuel Bakers registered in the Pontefract district within a year of each other, the other being 2nd Q, 1893.

There is definitely a family in the 1901 census with a Samuel born approx. 1893, living in Pontefract, parents William and Clara, but to be sure that this is your family then you will need the details from one of his marriage certificates to ascertain what his father's name and occupation was.

Many thanks for yr prompt reply.  I don't think the 1893 Samuel Baker is my one, this one died in the first world war.  I have been thinking of sending for his first marriage cert.  Does anyone know the address of the Pontefract Register Office. Many thanks.

I have just found this page, William Baker & Clara Baker (Nee Fenn) are my Great grand parents born in Walsham le Willows..William son (M) died in action 1918 France. Samual died at Pontefract military hospital unmarried.
Pontefract registery office address. Town Hall Pontefract Horsefair.
3 brothers from Walsham le Willows arrived in the Pontefract area about 1890
William, James, & George Baker I only researched my direct line from William & Clara, but I understand there were more children.
Regarding the search for the other Samual does any of these places ring any bells. Ferrybridge, Wakefield. Burton Salmon. Fryston or Box Hill

My Samuel Bakers parents were John and Mary Hannah Baker.  John Baker was born in Bilston, Staffs in abt 1866.  My Samuel was not the one killed in WWI, he lived to be over 80 years of age.  I know he was a miner at Fryson Colliery for many years.  I have a copy of John and Mary's wedding certificate but there wasn't a name in the Groom's fathers' space, so I think he could have been illigitimate.

According to Rootschat member  Mary A -post 2 there were two Samuel Baker's born in Pontefract one 1893 and the one you say 1894. The 1901 census say the son Samuel of William and Clara was born 1893.! thus Samuel b Dec 1894 by elimination must be yours. You say you  know?  ???  the parents as John and Mary Hannah

I would sent for the birth certificate of Samuel Baker Dec 1894 and there is a lower purchase rate if its wrong.

Have you tried Gens reun*ted website
