Please could someone give me some idea of the date of this photo. Also I would like some information on the necklace she is wearing. She is my 1 or 2 x grt grandmother.
Thanks Lynda

Could we see the whole thing, please, including the back if there is any printing on it...and always scan in colour...thanks,
China

Sorry I was given it as a copy black and white photo. I don't know if there was any thing on the back. A cousin in Canada gave it to me when he was visiting the UK.

Is there a wedding ring on her finger? It looks as though there might be one and she is holding her hands as if to show one off.

Just a quick clean up

Thanks Irene that is wonderful.

Yes I think it is a wedding ring. I am almost wondering if it is a wedding photo?
It looks like flowers in her hand.

That is what I was thinking. Do you know the date of her marriage?
Robert

Well, maybe about 1865 or so?

I don't know the date of her marriage. If it is Elizabeth Carpenter (nee Cole) from Buckfastleigh. I can not find a marriage record as yet for her and James Carpenter.
China 1865 is not far off. If it is a marriage photo it would be somewhere from 1862.
Her husband was in China in the army up until late 1861. He came back to England in April 1862.
Thanks

Hi Lynda02,
I couldnt resist the challenge after looking at your lovely picture.
Are you sure she was Elizabeth COLE and not TUCKER?
All the childrens baptisms are on the Cornwall OPC site in Hessenford. He seems to have been a Pensioner Royal Artillery, then Innkeeper when older children were baptised and Farmer later. Found them 1871/1881 Census and all childrens names match.
The only Marriage that fits is from Freebmd and Cornwall site is to an Elizabeth TUCKER, 04 March 1862 St Germans. James is a widower also from Cornwall record. By their ages in 1871 both could have been married before.
Cannot find a Marriage to Elizabeth Cole anywhere in England.
I love James parents names Bernard Carpenter and Temperance Moon :)
Cheers,
Trish
EDIT Found an Eliz. Coles, servant in 1851 Census, still no marriage thoug even with soundex :(

Hi Trish
I am sure that it is not Tucker. I did think it at first but have checked the later census and it looks to be his uncle. James Came back to England in April 1862 so it has to be after that. Their first child Harriet was born c1863. I have found her baptism but not the GRO ref. There is a possibility that they married abroad while he was serving in the army. But I am not sure about this as he wrote a sort of diary about it but does not mention a wife or lady in is life other than his mother.
I know she was Cole from the birth certificate of my grt grandmother. Which says Elizabeth Carpenter formerly Cole. In all census 1871 onwards she says she is from Buckfastleigh. The only time I can not find her is 1861. I have her and possible family in 1841/1851 but I need the marriage to confirm it is the right person.

Have to agree that this is probably a wedding picture,it also looks to be
an Ambrotype (on glass) so an early 1860's date which corresponds with
her hair/dress style which is early - mid 1860's. as China says.
jim
PS I know what you're thinking..her ring would be on the other hand if this was on glass but I think she's put it on her right hand & the photographer has enhanced it to make it more visible.
-
Okay...this is getting complicated...if the ring appears to be on the right hand in an ambrotype, it's really on the left.
But the engagement ring was worn on the right hand...what if it's an engagement photo?? ?? ??
If the photographer would enhance a ring to draw attention to it, would he also have the lady put it on her "other" hand so it wouldn't look reversed in the finished portrait?? ?? ??
Would your Canadian cousin know if the photo was originally on glass?
You can never have too much confusion ;D
-
I don't think it's an engagement ring as there's no stone in it,it looks like a gold band.

Just to muddy the waters further, without checking anything ::) ::) ::)
Could she not have married previously to a Tucker and been widowed ??? ???
Mark :)
