In my family I have a girl, Mary Agnes born 1935 at 26 Poplar Grove.
Am I correct in thinking this is Stepping Hill Hospital?
The cert gives the details of the parents, mums maiden name etc.
The birth was registered by the father of another address in Stockport.
The family story is that she was actually born to mums sister, and the aunt and uncle bought her up.
Is there any way I can check hospital birth records to see if mums named?
Could it have been possible for the aunt and uncle to register her as their own child?
It is not known who the father was.
Thank You.

Frithy, you are correct the address for Stepping Hill is as follows:
Stockport NHS Foundation Trust
Stepping Hill Hospital
Poplar Grove
Hazel Grove
Stockport
SK2 7JE
I doubt that the hospital records will still survive. They are usually only kept for a maximum of 25 - 30 years after the birth of a child.
Have you looked at the General Register Office index for the child? In the period you state 1935 the mothers maiden name is usually given next to their entry. If you don't have access to these if you post the last name of Mary Agnes and her approx birth date I will look for you.

I have her birth cert and her named parents. But I think the aunt and uncle registered her as their own child.
Especially as she was born in a hospital and not at home, and theres 12 years between this birth and her brother.
I'm trying to find her hospital birth record to see if different mum named (a sister of parent named).
Also I found something on national Archives today. It says that clinical & patients records for 1935 are held at Stepping Hill and the details are from WIHM BG. 1981. Umist survey of the North West.
So I'm going to contact the hospital to see what they can find.
Many thanks.

Don't read too much into this. There were 10 years between my Dad & his sister, and between me and my sister, and 9 years between my Mum and her sister - and no pregnancies in between!

There's 11 years between myself and my sister. So I know what you mean. But its the fact of the family story handed down and her daughter would love to know the truth and theres no one left to ask.
This girl was also about 7 weeks old before she was registered.
Time will tell....

Hi Frithy
Just browsing and came across this
My GGrandmother died at 26 Poplar Grove in 1920 so it must have been attached to the Hospital in some way but not found anything so far.
Will have another go when I next get to Stockport

I see this an old post but I was born at 26 Poplar Grove, Stockport in 1952. Was looking on google to try and find a street view of the house. But it appears to be a Police Stn now?
Would anyone here know if # 26 was an actual house or was it the Hospital address of birth?
Thanks to insights one could share with me.
All the best
David

I believe it was a house on Poplar Grove that was used by Stepping Hill Hospital.
Now shows up on google maps as one of the units.
Don't think it's ever been a police station.

I would suspect that it was the address given for Stepping Hill Hospital. For some reason or other, hospitals were given street addresses, rather than their name - was this because hospitals were, at one time, only associated with the Workhouse? :-X
Withington Hospital, in 1937 and 1946 for example, was detailed as 20 Nell Lane, on a birth and death certificate.

You might like to look at this. You will have to scroll down to find the item related to Poplar Grove - "A porter's lodge stood at the entrance to the site on Poplar Grove."
