It's four days for me and I am thinking of not re-newing unless they give me a good discount  :-[  but how long would I last without giving in if they say no    ???

They will, but it may take a month or so  ;)  I decided not to renew my sub because of financial constraints. After a week I had terrible withdrawal symptoms, and even got my grand-daughter to sign up for the 14-day free trial just so I could go back without cost.   ::) I couldn't do it myself because they'd have known my details  :)  After about a month I got an e-mail offering me a decent discount for re-joining, so I did, but so far I haven't used it very much because I've had too much to do elsewhere and Family History has taken a bit of a back seat  ???
FindMyPast will also offer discounts from time to time, so watch out for them if you are a member  :)

My sub to Ancestry expired a year ago and I'm still waiting for them to offer me a discount to resubscribe.  :(

Well that's a shame, bearkat ???  I can't think why they've apparently ignored you, but have a look around their website and see if there's anything on there about discounts.  Or maybe you could contact them and ask? You never know, it might make them take notice  ;)  If not, try the 14-day free trial and see if that gets a result  :)
Good luck anyway  :)

Fingers crossed that they do mother25  :)

I have phoned up, but they only offered 10% off....£155.00  :-X  the young lady said that that's all they are authorised to offer.

Last year when they thought I hadn't rejoined the £75 subscription, they offered 20% off :-\

I really need the Global subscription as I have exhausted the UK one :-[

I have the global subscription but I pay monthly. Costs a bit more the the yearly but as I couldn't afford the whole amount in one go decided to go for the monthly option.

Hi Jean, :)

I thought about doing that until I can find out what Countries most of my relli's went to, they shot off to so many different places from Cornwall.

That seems a bit mean to me...I got 20% off, but it isn't the Global version, so maybe they don't offer as much off that. A bit unfair though as it costs so much. The monthly sub sounds like an option at least until you find a few connections, then you can re-consider  ;)
Good luck anyway  :)

Jean

"A bit more" ?

It's a whopping 50% more !  If you paid for it by credit card, and only paid the minimum amount (I mean 1/12 of the money every month), you would still save 30% on the monthly price !  ::)

My sub ran out back in November (?) and I didn't renew, I needed a break I thought, but then back in June there was a link on a board here  to a special discount - half price - offer for Ancestry, on all the different subs, so I couldn't resist and took the offer up on the World Wide Sub - yippee!
Offer expired at end of June tho   :'(
newbie ;D

I tried ringing again to see if I could budge them into giving me a better discount than 10% on the Global sub £155.00.....no :'( :'(

I told them I wasn't going to re-new my sub, so I am an X member from the 29th :'(

Already I am thinking about giving in :-[

Don't give up ambers, keep your eyes open for a special deal either on the site or via a link somewhere....there's bound to be something coming up soon   :)
Also have a look at FindMyPast which has a lot of records very similar to Ancestry and is cheaper. They also have a lot of options such as pay-as-you go, six-monthly sub, and I think you can still buy vouchers for, say, a month or so, which may help you to decide whether or not you like the site. There's also The Genealogist, but I have no experience of that so can't give you any information.
Good luck  ;)

I think FindMyPast's loyalty scheme is fairer -  a set discount for renewing your membership rather than offering a variable percentage discount, if any, to tempt you back.

FindMyPast does not have all the census though, which is sooo frustrating.

Don't forget you can save your clubcard points and exchange them for Family Tree Maker Platinum which includes a 6 month essentials membership to Ancestry.

Having done Cold Turkey for a month :'(....they have sent me a 20% off offer ;D ;D

I really wanted to get the World subscription, as I had exhausted the UK records.

The offer  couldn't have come at a better time because a week ago I discovered about thirty relatives emigrated at the same time to the US....gold mining.

I just couldn't have held out much longer after making contact with a rellie ..... the frustration of not being able to see them all  on the census was killing me  >:(

Hi Newbie,

I least I got some discount ;D  ...oh err, you waited six months :o
I do wish there was some automatic discount for members who rejoin year after year.

The worst was I told all my friends about the 50% offer, but didn't realise my own subscription was up for renewal ::), I missed it by days, but they wouldn't give in.

I have had written contact with my gggrandfathers brothers family, all of them emigrated to USA c1874 (30 of them)  ;D ;D ;D

That's wonderful Ambers  :) To have made a contact like that is really great, but fancy 30 of them emigrating all those years ago...how very brave of them  ;) At least there's plenty of room in USA for big families ;D

Am I glad that I re-joined Ancestry ;D

As the Tin mines closed in Cornwall, many went abroad for the gold.

I can't believe that my 4xgrandmother went at the age of 60, how brave is that :o, and how did they manage with all those young children and babies ???

I  have just this moment received an email from another cousin...oh how how exciting is that. ;D,

I feel your excitement Ambers  ;D
It's amazing what so many families did all those years ago. Imagine trekking to America....no jet planes then, so just a very long sea journey ahead of them ???  Imagine all the children running around the decks, and mothers tearing their hair out trying to keep them under control and not to lose any overboard  :o  The conditions were probably very primitive, and then to find themselves in a strange country, far away from all that was familiar in UK. Probably no idea what they were coming to, and no idea whether or not they would be successful there.  What a terrible time they must have had, and I only hope your family managed to stay close and that they did succeed in what the set out to do  :)
Thanks for sharing your news  :)
