Title: JENKINS Chittlehampton/Chittlehamholt
Post by: Carol Mack on Thursday 23 July 09 10:28 BST (UK)
Can anyone tell me where I might find very early records for Jenkins of Chittlehampton/Chittlehamholt? They would have to be Church records - we are talking 1600's!!!

We have a Rose Jynkens of c.1580 but then various Johns, James and Thomases down to a Matthew (Rose's Gt Grandson)who married Mary Carder in 1701. Its the earlier families I would like to sort out.

If anyone could help with the whereabouts of records I would be very grateful.

Regards,
Carol

The answer to your question will be answered by looking at the following web page:-
http://www.devon.gov.uk/index/councildemocracy/neighbourhoods-villages/record_office/record_offices_in_devon/parish_register_list.htm

I know it is so long!
This is the page to look at for the whereabouts of Parish registers- IF they're not listed then there are two possible outcomes- they're still in the parish or they do not survive.

You might also want to try the OPC for Chittlehampton - Linda - go to http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/Chittlehampton/ and scroll down to 'genealogy' for the link.

Hi,
Many thanks for the info - interesting site. It looks like a lot of the records for Chittlehampton are on I.G.I but it might still be worth a mooch round the Records office and perhaps another visit to Chittlehampton and the Exeter Inn! (The Jenkins were the landlords in the 1800's!)

Since my initial burst of enthusiasm 9 years ago, I only occasionally check to see what new information has
emerged on the internet so I was most pleased to come across your entry while it was still fresh.
By your comments I presume you are a descendent (like me) of John Jenkins the proprietor of the Exeter Inn.
I have a photo of Elizabeth Jenkins (Ne Elliot) but not her husband John as well as  family letters from the period.
As I know of all the descendents of his eldest son James, and do not know of any progeny of his daughters I presume you are a descendent of his son John and Mary Ann Gardiner.  I believe I have a photo of this family which may be of interest, which was forwarded to me by a descendent of Matilda (Fleetwood?) who ran off with a carpenter who was passing through the village.
I would be interested to know of any photos / letters / stories that you had from this period and to see if you had been successful in going further back that 1580 and the marriage of Rose Jenkyns to Unk. Jenkins.

I believe Unk is short for unknown, so he was presumably new to the area as I imagine in such a small village everyone would know everyone else.

It is amusing to note that people have named their children Unk in honour of their forbears! ;p

St Catherines house holds a great amount of genealogical information which I would visit if I were in the UK.
There is also the Public records Office in South Molton.
I could make a list of the types of records that could be searched but these might not add much detail.
I have yet to pursue details from the 1901 and 1911 censuses.
Lately I have found interesting details in newspaper archives of the period.
I had been in contact with David Ryall who looked af

I would be pleased to compare notes with you.

Hello,
Yes, we are talking about the same Jenkins family although it is my husband who is the contact! He is decended from John's daughter Angelina.

I have sent you a personal message including our email address - we have an old photograph which we believe to be the family and some from recent visits to Chittlehamholt and Chittlehampton and we would love to see copies of anything you have.

Regards,
Carol

Hi
I am descended from John Jenkins and Elizabeth Elliot (my Grandmother was Cora Elliot Jenkins daughter of James son of John & Elizabeth)
I have no knowledge of John being the proprietor of the Exeter Inn so it is lovely hearing that information. I would dearly love to have any information and photos that you have.
I have a photo of James Elliot Jenkins (my Great Grandfather) born in 1860 if that is of any interest also of his daughter Cora.

Jennifer

Hi Jennifer,
Sorry its taken so long to answer! I will certainly try to scan the photographs, although I'm not great at that sort of thing and I would love to have copies of yours.
I sent you my email address in the P.M. so let me have yours and I will see what I can do.
Its well worth looking up the Exeter Inn -John Jenkins is mentionedin the history.

Carol
