I have been trying to help an US friend find John Henry Weinmann born in Ireland died in US c. 1853. The information available is sparse and it is not know what religion he was. Supposed to be born in Ireland c. 1836 to father John Henry Weinmann 1(b. 1795 Germany d. 23 Apr 1845 US) and mother Eliza surname unknown (b. 1798 Ireland d. 1879 US) John Hery 2 had a Sister Susanna A. Weinmann (b. Sep 4 1831 d. 1896 NY)
I have found very little relating to the Weinmann surname- Have a birth record of an Eliza A Wineman 19 Aug 1842 St Patrick's RC Co Antrim parents Edward Wineman mother Ellen -no surname. but have not found any other records for this time period. The Civil reg index is showing two Weinmann births in 1898 and 1900- I haven't got the certs as yet. There are also some Weinmann registration in Dublin in the 1940's but cannot find the surname or possible variants in any other counties.
I would be glad of any pointers or help.

If the family all left Ireland and moved to US then there might not be many records to find in Ireland. Civil registration started in 1864 (births, deaths, Catholic marriages) and 1845 (non-Catholic marriages). First conplete census is 1901. As with all other Irish research you really need to know a more exact place (parish if not townland) to start searching for church records, etc.
There may be clues in US records so you need to check everything there carefully. For example, U.S. death certificates (depending on the state and period) often list birthdates, birthplaces, names of parents, etc.

Thanks Aghadowey
That is all the available information from the US records. I decided to post the query in the faint hope that the surname might ring a bell with someone.

Hi Annclare,
I am descended from a philipp Weinmann who came to Ireland from Oberotterbach in Germany in the 1890's. I believe the Weinmann family you located in Dublin in the 1940'S are a branch of this family but during my research I've come across a Weinmann family living in Co. Down Ireland mentioned in the 1901 Census. Hope this is of some use.

Thanks for your reply. I haven't been able to make any connection with John Henry Weinmann who died c.1853 and the record of Elisa Wineman b. 1842
so it is doubtful if the Weinmann family in the 1901 census are connected.
But it certainly is worth checking out.
