Is there any way that I could find out who was living at 91 Bond Street, Moss Side, Manchester in 1932. Alfred came from Canada and this was the address of his destination. Any help would be appreciated. Poppyann

If you can get to Manchester RO you could look in the electoral roll. This will give you everyone over 21. Liverpool RO will do 15 minutes research for free, maybe MRO does the same, or only charge a nominal amount.
You should also look in the Lookup Offers in case someone has the nearest Directory. The 1931 Census was destroyed during WW2, so you will never find a list of children.

Thanks Ken, I am trying to find out why Alfred Phillips came back from Canada to this address. Unfortunately I don't live near Liverpool. Poppyann

If you contact Manchester RO they may do a free search.

Alfred Phillips emigrated from Liverpool, UK to Montreal, Canada 1921
Surnames: Phillips / May
I am hoping someone can help provide info about my relative Alfred (Alfie) Phillips, (possibly also known as Alfred May) He was born in Liverpool in Dec 1908 and emigrated in 1921, aged 12 as part of the Barnardo's (Nugent Care as it was then known) Home Children Farming Program. We know he was placed on a farm in the Montreal area and stayed there until 1927 when he moved on. After that we don't know where he went. Would love to hear from anyone who might be related to him or can provide any info whatsoever.
Was just wondering if this is the same person? We have been looking for a while - Alfred was my grand-fathers Brother

My grand-father was Daniel . His father Alexander had died, and their mother re-married and died in1919. My grand-father and Alfred went into an industrial school and were both to be sent out to Canada, but my grand-father went to live with his brother Albert. I have looked at the records at the industrial school and Alfred went to Canada on the Minnedosa to Toronto in 1923. We have been in touch with Albert's grand-daughter and her grand-dad had thought that Alfred would try to get back to England and we do know that he did try to get in touch with his brothers via a newspaper article in later years. We had a feeling he may have reverted back to the name Phillips, but are not sure.

We also know that Mary Ellen went on to have two other daughters Winifred and Edith May,
Edith born 2nd Dec 1914, - who went to live with Mary Ellens relatives in Gorey - But we know nothing more about their family
-
We also know that Albert went over to Canada to try to bring Alfie back, but he had been 'signed over' for 5 years - so it is a sad story. We do know that Danny and Albert both passed the story down through their children and grand-children, and both sets of grand-children have been trying to search for a while - and between us all we do have quite a lot of information - so any help that anyone could give us would be great!

Where is Gorey

Did Alfred have a middle name
Alfred M May to Dorothy K Allinson
St Anne, Stanley ,Liverpool 1935

Alfred was always known officially as Alfred (John) Phillips.
The only time he has been known as May, is on the 1911 Census, which was filled in by the head of the house Samuel Thomas May, - we do know that he was Alfred Phillips on his birth certificate, and we have records from the authorities up until 1926 in Canada, where he was known as Alfred Phillips, but we think when he went over to Canada, Samuel may may have signed the paper-work as Alfred May.
So we think that if he married, he would have to have used the surname Phillips. We have a contact in Canada who can find no trace of him after 1927 when he left the farm, so we have wondered did he come back to England at some point. After my grand-dad Daniel died in 1974, we do know that Alfie posted a notice in the Liverpool Echo looking for his siblings. We are not sure if this was from Canada or the UK. The notice was mis-laid so we did not contact him. Albert's family also saw the Echo notice. I was only 9 at the time but I had thought that there was a postal strike on at the time and that is why no reply could be made. I think there was a Canadian postal strike on in that year.
Thank you so much for taking the time out to help.
Gorey is in County Wexford Ireland, and we are pretty sure that the two younger girls went back there.
Regards Jackie

Have you contacted the Echo ,they will possibly have an archive ,even if you have to pay it would be worth the search fee,1974 isnt that long ago
-
I have been in touch with them and they said we would have to go through all of the copies on a Thursday when those notices went in. Have been in touch with the older family members and they cannot remember how long after my grand-father died that the notice went in - so it could be a few years worth. I seem to remember them being upset because they had missed each other, so I have a feeling it wasn't too much long after - reply from Liverpool records office:
here is no index for the Liverpool Echo so, as you have realised, without an exact date it will be very difficult and time consuming to trace the contact details. If a member of your family would like to try, I would suggest that they establish which day of the week requests for contact details were published in the Echo and then look in that day for each subsequent week. The Echo is available on microfilm at the library section in the World Museum in William Brown Street.

Post from Inductrial school records: 22nd July 1921
Alfred Phillips,- left for Canada on the SS Minnedosa under the auspices of the Catholic Emigration Society. The boys had a rousing send off and each received a present from the boys and staff.
So the records that we have for an Alfred may sailing in 1923 was wrong.
We have no record of Alfred Phillips sailing over in 1921, but we do have records from over in Canada from the Catholic emmigration society going up to 1926 - a farm near Hemmingford!

In an earlier post you mention Barnardo's and say it was then Nugent. Barnardo's was a completely different organisation.
Nugent was Catholic. On the post showing Alfred was Protestant it says Barnardo's on the one with Catholic Emmigration Society it is Catholic.
Was the one you are looking for Protestant or RC?
If he was Protestant I would contact Barnardo's in the UK. If he is RC I would contact the Nugent Society here in the UK.
-
Thank you so much. One of our relatives has some documentation up to 1926 - it was the Catholic emmigration association, but after he left their auspices in 1927, we have no record of him.
But the post about the sailing in 1921 has cleared up one thing - that he never used the surname May, which was causing confusion, I think that is what we need really - to put everything in some sort of order!

I would also register with the Home childrens society of Ottawa,
its free and has many resources and volunteers,

Thank you - I will try that!

I had an e-mail from Albert Phillips' 9Brother of Alfred Phillips) grand-daughter a while ago
I decided a few weeks ago to get onto the story of Alfie, I am fairly sure that he returned to England and possibly it was to Manchester, because Alfie, wrote to my Granddad Albert, to ask for money to return home to England, but that was perhaps around 1920’s and Granddad sent money, but Alfie didn’t come back, then some time later he wrote again, but this time there was no money for him.
