I wonder if someone can help me decipher my fathers war record in the royal marines. The only information it gives are division or ship and the dates but no information with regard to location or if someone knows of a good book that might help I would be very gratefull.
The information is as follows.
HBLMNBDO Jan 1 1941- May 17 1944
HMS Volcano May 18 1944- June 7 1944
Odyssay (RNP1732) June 8 1944- Sep 11 1945
Best regards

HBL ??? - a component of an MNBDO?
MNBDO - Mobile Naval Base Defence Organisation (1 MNBDO served in UK - 1940-41), Crete, Egypt, Syria and from 1943 Ceylon)
HMS Volcano - was the RN Bomb and Munitions Training School located at Holmrook Hall, Cumbria.

Could anyone please tell me how I can find out which troop of The 45 Commandoes my late Father was in ?.
He served in The Marines from april 1940 till March 1943, then the 45 Commandoes till August 1945
I have his service record but it does not tell me the troop.

I found this helpful piece of information on http://forum.commandoveterans.org/cdoForum/posts/list/1695.page
There were 2 MNBDO groups in WW2 . The second was formed in 1941 and disbanded just before D Day with most of the men absorbed into the RM Commandos. They did serve I believe in Italy before disbandment.
The HBL at the end of the number is
Home Based Ledger, i.e. miscellaneous personnel
As I said MNBDO 2 disbanded in April/May 1944 and most of the men were absorbed into the RM Commandos and an Anti-Aircraft Brigade, and to become landing craft crew for the Normandy landings that June .
