How do I get hold of a marriage certificate which took place in 1808? I don't think this age of certificate is available through Swansea Registry Office.
I would like to buy the marriage certificate of a John Shepherd and Mary Chalk who married on 8/03/1808 in Porteynon.
Could anyone advise me please?

Hi Welshgirl
Registration for Birth,Marriages & Deaths did`nt start until the 3rd Q of 1837.
The Records Office is the place to go.If your lucky the Marriage may have Witnesses.
I have some from the 1700s which are similar to a Marriage Cert BUT the fathers names were`nt added until 1837.
Hope this helps

You need to find the Parish Record of the marriage,
do you know where they were married, Chapel or Church, Non-conformist, Roman Catholic? Once you know where you can visit the local Record office which may hold a copy on film or fiche (or original if you're lucky), if you are not able to visit the local record office you can still order in the relevant film at your local LDS (mormon) Family history centre for a small fee, then you can print a copy of the marriage register!
good luck
