Title: Williams of Llansamlet before 1860
Post by: pedroparker on Friday 17 July 09 20:28 BST (UK)
Hi

Im looking for some help, here's what i have:

My fathers mamgu (gran) was Ellen Williams b 1885 llansamlet d 1955, she had many brothers and sisters:
Margaret b1866
Hopkin b1868
William b1871 d1932
Thomas b1873
Guenllian b1875 d1875
Henry b1876
Gwenllian b1880 d1965
John b1883 d1963
Mary b1885 d1963
David b1887
Ann b1888
All with surname Williams and born in Llansamlet

Their mother was Eleanor Sims who married their father John Williams in 1866.
I would like to trace the Williams side of the family, John Williams was born in Llansamlet in 1843 and I have tried to trace any brothers, sisters or parents, but havn't had much luck in doing so, I have one possibilty that I came accross but havn't been able to link much at all :(

So if anyone can help me find his past, parents, granparents, etc, before his marriage I would be very grateful

Thanks

Pedro

Hi pedroparker

Do you have John & Ellen's wedding certificate from 1866 as this will give you his father's name & occupation?

There are several possiblities in the censuses and it would help to give all the information you have.

I would suggest if you don't have it, to purchase it as it will help you through the Williams' maze.

Marriages Dec 1866

You can order online if you didn't know

thanks Wendy47,

Non has kindly provided us with the marriage info,

thanks Non,

I have a good bit of info for the sims side going back to the 1700's but hardly any for the Williams. It's almost as bad as tracing Smith ;D

Ellen also went under names of Elinor - as Non said and Eleanor.

It would be interesting to no which Sims sister you are linked to Non, and if you are still living in the area, as my dad and his cousin often meet up with family members and swap info and photos

That's brill Wendy!  :)

Wainllestr/Wernllestr is an area my dad remembers family used to live in llansamlet, Cwm chapel area, mostly welsh speaking, not a huge place, so this sounds very likely to be him.

I have never heard of Tregwl though, maybe the area has been knocked down or cleared over the years. It is abreviated as Llanst , which is still probably short for Llansamlet as you mentioned, I'm trying to think of any areas close by it could be, starting with 'Llans' and ending with a 't' :-\

hi wendy,

I have found Tregwl! ;D

It is mentioned on the british history online site, parliamentary boundaries Swansea.
It says the boundary hamlet of st. thomas near Tregwl.

st. thomas is a short walk away so he must be the correct 1.

I do hope it is them. Glad I could help as research in Wales can be a nightmare. Luckily my family originated in the West Country before setting up in Wales so i have an easy name to find!!

I think you may have to confirm these findings some other way i.e. Parish records. The IGI is not on at the moment but that may have some info.

Hi Pedro,

Have been trawling through my Llansamlet records and have found baptisms for John & William Williams - both were baptised at Salem Capel y Cwm on 13th August 1843, Parents Thomas (a collier) & Margaret Williams of Nant y Gwindy.

OH's great grandmother was Rebecca Sims (1857-1928) I've managed to get OH Sims line back to about 1760 ish.

All the Sims' from Llansamlet and the surrounding area appear to be related in one way or another - there seems to be a few cases of cousins marrying - could be the reason why hubby's got a limp ;)
And yes I still live in the area

Regards,
Non

thanks non and wendy

I think i may have opened a can of worms on this 1 :(

alot of possibilities trying to track down Thomas Williams and his wife before the marriage, as wendy said earlier, not an easy name.
Llansamlet, llangyfelach, eglwsilan, llanelli, cwmdu and a possible 10-20 year emigration to Utah and back have been thrown in the works, none of which i can tie down as of yet, :-\ I will keep trying and see if something falls into place, so fingers crossed.

thanks for you help

pedro

Message for "Non".  Hi, I wonder if you could help me?  I am trying to find out about Hopkin Sims b. 1814 married to Gwenllian (Unknown).  They were the parents of Elen, Elinor, Eleanor, who married John Williams.  Eleanor's sister, Mary Sims is my g.grandmother, she married George Bevan.  Could you give me an information at all on Hopkin Sims siblings or parents please & possibly Gwen.s maiden name.  Many thanks, REgards, David
