Title: coulthards at cockermouth
Post by: Smudgie on Friday 17 July 09 16:58 BST (UK)
I wonder of one of you could help me as I seem to have come to a dead end in Cockermouth.  Lovely place to be stuck but itching to go further.

The 1851 Census shows my great, great, great grandparents, James and Margaret Couthard living in Aigburth, Liverpool.  They were both born in Cockermouth, Cumberland.  Living with them are James' mother, Alice Coulthard (born in the Isle of Man in 1770), and Margaret's mother, Jane Robinson (born in Wesmorland in 1774).  What appears to be their only son, William, was also born in Cockermouth in 1830.

I have not managed to find a marriage record for James and Margaret.  Although I have found a James and Margaret (nee Guy) who married on 15th March 1829 in Cockermouth (possibly All Saints) but puzzled by the fact that Margaret's mother's name is Robinson on the 1851 Census.

I have also found a William Coulthard christened at All Saints on 24th January 1830 but parents are JOHN and Margaret.

I'm desperate to find something positive and, if possible, make the jump over to the Isle of Man.  For that I need Alice Coulthard's maiden name.  Also need to discover her husband's name and find out if they both came from the Isle of Man.

Yes, I know, a tall order, but there may be a really knowledgeable person out there who could suggest some new moves.

Thanks in anticipation.

Found a Family Tree, unfortunately with no sources that has James born to ;
William COULTHARD, born 1771, Kirk German, Isle of Man
Died July 1845, Whitehaven, Cumberland
(To me looks more likely 1846 from Freebmd)
Wife, Alice FARGHER ( no date or marriage ref)
They have Alice dying in 1846 Lancashire. Think this is correct ref as we know she was alive 1851;
Alice COULTHARD, June 1854, Liverpool, 8b 16

Can't offer anything specific but there is a big, big connection between that part of west cumberland and the isle of man. Maryport is named after a mary christian who married the local bigwig and fletcher christian came from a little village just outside cockermouth. You could also check whether Magt's mother Jane guy  didn't marry a robinson or even that this was Magt's second marriage after marrying a guy.

Re your PM;

COULTHARD Christenings, Marown, Isle of Man ;
JANE Coulthard, 29 December 1809, Father Wm Coulthard
THOMAS Coulthard, 14 July 1816, Father WM Coulthard, Mother Alice FARGHER

Submitted IGI Marriage for Jane to Henry GOULDING, 18 April 1830, Cockermouth, Cumberland

There are 2 Alice FARGHER Christenings on the IGI in the Isle of Man, 1772/1775

Now another possible Marriage for William although he would be only 18;
William COLTHARD
Margaret GRAHAM
13 April 1822, St Michael, Stanwix, Cumberland

I am as confused as you here but will potter about to see if I can come up with anything.
