Hi all,
I have been trying to find family information on Thomas Crowe, hung for mutinee on the barq The Caswell, in 1876.
He was hung in Cork at age 63. There is a book The Riddle of The Caswell, but family info not there.\
It is very possible he was part of our family tree, but without more information we are depending on very vaque passed down references.
Does anyone know more about him or does he appear in anyone's family tree here.

Was he though, hung for Mutiny on the "Caswell"? Or was it that he was in jail with one of the mutineers (BOMBAS) and both were hung the same day?
The Riddle of the Caswell, the excerpt here:

....says one of the Mutineers was imprisoned with a 63 yr old Fenian, Thomas CROWE and they "provided the spectacle of a double hanging in Cork Prison".
It also lists the 16 crew of the CASWELL, who has sailed from Argentina pre-Mutiny as:
2 Jumped Ship - Irishman and a German, and were never heard from again
4 murdered in the Mutiny by the Greek crew - The Captain, 1st Mate, 2nd Mate, & a black welsh Steward
2 murdered in the Counter Mutiny by the British Crew
1 Hanged 1876 - Christos Emmanuel BOMBOS
1 Hanged 1879 - one of the 2 PISTORIA brothers who had escaped 3 yrs before; tried in Cork
6 Returned - to tell the tale (must include the surviving PISTORIA brother).
No Thomas CROWE in that list?

Sixty three year old Thomas Crowe ....found guilty of the murder of John Hyland, a driver who worked for a land agent called Nat Buckely, in Tipperary. Buckely was returning after collecting a large amount of money ...... cart he was travelling in was ambushed.....The police who were escorting the agent caught one of the men, but he was left unattended when two others opened fire at the cart. During the fight, someone shot Hyland. When Crowe was arrested, he contested he was innocent and that he was the first man they had detained. He was hanged on the 25th August 1876 in Cork by William Marwood.

Hi,
thanks for the info Ambly. The book has a chapter 7 on the trial of Thomas Crowe. I am waiting for a copy of the book and hope that the chapter concerns this Crowe and how he figures into the Caswell mutiny as he was hung for mutiny according to a list of capital hangings in Britain.
Regardless, I still am looking forward to finding out family information on the Crowe listed in the book.

oh I forgot to mention.
It is very possible that I looked up Thomas Crowe and possibly he was not the one in the book The Riddle of the Caswell.

The list is incorrect in attributing age 63 (Thomas' age ) to BOMBAS, who was only 24.....

I can't work out why the trial and execution of Thomas CROWE is part of the book at all, other than he was executed same day as BOMBAS ??? ??? Maybe I missed it, in my very quick scim thru!

Thanks for that addy for the chapter on Crowe, I cant see any connection with the Caswell mutiny either, wonder why the author put it in, maybe he was paid by the word,haha.
The rumour in our family is that we had a pirate in the tree, cant find anything related except the Crowe connection.
There was a Captain Hugh Crowe who captained a slave trader, legal, but I read his memoirs and he is quite legitimate and retired to the Isle of Mann is my memory serves me right. He also had a brother who was a ships captain also, but I couldnt find any information on him.
I still remain perplexed.

The only reason the murder is included in the book is because Thomas Crowe and Christos Bombos were hung together in Cork in August, 1876 - Christos for his part in the murder and mutiny on board the Caswell, Crowe for his part in the the attack on land agent Mr Patton Smight Bridge, and the murder of his driver/servant, John Hyland - a case known as 'the Mitchelstown Murder'. They were two seperate cases, the men only brought together in the last few moments of their lives.
I can't recall any references to Crowe's family in the book, other than that he was raised Catholic and had a couple of priests with him at the end.

No. The surviving Pistoria brother (Gaspari) was never caught. He's believed to have stayed in Buenos Aires with his wife and family, but they disappeared.
BY the way, it occured to me the dates might help your search - the trial took place on Tuesday 25th July 1876. He was hung on 25th August 1876. The book describes his execution.

Thomas Crowe was from Ardvillane, Mount Bruis, Tipperary Town. His family grave is in Mount Bruis.
