Hi

Have you seen the submitted entries on IGI at www.familysearch.org for the following baptisms?

Sarah Phillipps
Baptised 19 September 1835
Padstow, Cornwall

William Henry Phillipps
Baptised 8 September 1836
Padstow, Cornwall

Both baptised as children of "Johnathan Phillipps & Sarah"

The usual unreliability warnings as to IGI submitted entries apply, but this might give you a starting point at least.

Anna :)

Hi Terry,

Home and able to view the fiche so can add a bit to what Fizzy has said

full marriage entry

Jonathan Webber PHILLIPPS OTP Bachelor = Sarah WITHELL OTP Spinster with the consent of parents by Licence Padstow  10 Jan 1825

both signed (a little differently than how the name is listed above) - Jonathan Webber Philipps and Elizth Sarah Withell
witnesses Martin WITHELL and Jul./JW. PHILLIPPS

John PHILLIPPS OTP Bachelor = Mary RAWE OTP Spinster by Licence 29 Oct 1795 Padstow Both signed witnesses Thos ROWE and Wm ROWE

I feel I have had a good look but sadly did not spot Elizabeth Sarah's baptism.

I thought this marriage may be worth noting

Martin WITHELL OTP Bachelor  = Philippa BROWN OTP Spinster by Banns 26 Sep 1790 Padstow both signed witnesses Elizabeth Withell and Jonathan Hodge Banns were read 15, 22 and 29 August 1790 Padstow

Jane's baptism lists her parents as Jonathon and Sarah PHILLIPS (Shopkeeper of Padstow)

Sarah's baptism lists parents as Jonathan and Sarah PHILLIPS  (Draper of St Breock)

William Henry's baptism lists his parents as Jonathan and Sarah PHILLIPS (School Master of Padstow)

Given this huge gap I would expect more and the census shows there were others - possibly in St Breock

PHILLIPS John Martin baptised 21 Oct 1827 St Breock Parents Jonathan and Elizabeth Sarah
PHILLIPPS Jonathan Webber baptised 10 Aug 1829 St Breock parents Jonathan Webber and Elizabeth Sarah
PHILLIPS Charles batised 23 Oct 1831 St Breock parents Jonathan Webber and Elizabeth Sarah

Cheers Kris  :)

Iam new to this site and welcome any help anyone can give me. I am looking for links to John Phillipps who was Harbour Master of Padstow.  He lived from 1790 - 1872 and had at least two sons, William Mitchell Phillipps and Henry Mitchell Phillipps. If anyone on the site can assist it would be much appreciated.  I need spouses names and offspring.  William should have a son Frederick and Henry a daughter Christine Louise.   :)

Thanks but I do not think this is the correct one.  The family name is PHILLIPPS with two Ls and two Ps and the daughter of William is Christine Louise "Kitty".  Different family?   Curious that they are both from Padstow.  Thanks anyway.

Hi David,

A big Welcome to RootsChat  ;D

I wouldn't be too concerned about spelling. The spelling used in records is only as good as the person writing the entry. Though none of these records list John as a harbour Master.

Mary Jane PHILLIPS was baptised 10 Mar 1824 at Padstow parents John and Fanny Shopkeeper of Padstow
Fanny PHILLIPS was baptised 10 Apr 1825 at Padstow parents John and Fanny Mercer of Padstow
Elizabeth Ann PHILLIPS was baptised 4 Apr 1826 at Padstow parents John and Fanny Shopkeeper of Padstow
John Henry PHILLIPS was baptised 25 Mar 1827 at Padstow parents John and Fanny Shopkeeper of Padstow
Emily PHILLIPPS was baptised 6 Jul 1828 at Padstow parents John and Fanny Draper of Padstow
Maria PHILLIPPS was baptised 2 Apr 1830 at Padstow parents John and Fanny Draper and Grocer of Padstow
William PHILLIPPS was baptised 22 Jan 1832 at Padstow parents John and Fanny Draper of Padstow
Lavinia PHILLIPPS was baptised 28 Jun 1835 at padstow parents John and Fanny Shopkeeper of Padstow
Henry Mitchell PHILLIPPS was baptised 26 Feb 1836 at padstow parents John and Fanny. father Draper of Padstow
Louisa Gertrude PHILLIPPS was baptised 15 Aug 1844 at Padstow parents John and Fanny Grocer of Padstow

Have you tracked the family in the census?

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,144624.0.html

John PHILLIPS OTP Bachelor = Fanny MITCHELL OTP spinster by Licence 7 Dec 1823 at Padstow. Both Signed (John signed John PHILIPPS) witnesses Wm MITCHELL and Jonathan Webber PHILLIPPS

Fanny dies pre 1851 - I wonder if it may have been childbirth related. I see from the census John has a second wife Mary in 1861 - possible

John PHILLIPPS = Mary CALLAWAY Mar 1/4 1861 St Columb 5C 156

Cheers Kris  :)

Fanny PHILLIPPS was buried Sep 2 1844 at Padstow. She was aged 41 of Padstow cause of death "fever" so yes most likely a childbirth related infection.

John PHILLIPPS was buried 29 Nov 1875 at Padstow. He was aged 78 of Padstow

Cheers Kris  :)

John PHILLIPS 6 Mar 1798 at Padstow parents John and Mary, so it appears John and Jonathan listed above were brothers

Siblings
Jenny 16 Mar 1796
Mary 6 Mar 1798
Jonathan 28 Apr 1800
William 17 Nov 1801

Be sure to check The Malcolm McCarthy Collection.

I have so much to learn with this.  How are you getting into this detail?  Is it publicly available?  I am in the States so there are many references to archives and other materials with which I am not familiar.  My principal tool is Ancestry.com but it is very focused on the US and much of my family history is in South Africa, Ireland and the UK.

Again thanks much.

Hi David,

The reason I am able to provide such detail with the Padstow Records is that I have a copy of the records on microfiche which I purchased from the CRO. I use many resources.

There is much available free online these days. I suggest you take a good look at the resources listed for your countries/counties of interest. I always start with what is available free of charge. Cornwall is a great county for free resources. The sites we know about are all listed on our resource boards.

Outside of the free resources we all do need to consider what is most important for our own research, be it taking up subscriptions or purchasing CD's. I still have many census CD's in my collection purchased before so much was available either freely or subscription/pay per view sites.

Ancestry is a wonderful resource but it will depend on your subscription. If you have a world sub you will get many UK and Australian records. If you have only taken out a US subscription and have a lot of UK research you may consider upgrading.

Regards Kris  :)

Kris, thanks for the reply.  I do have the global ancestry.com but still think it is very slanted to the US data.  Thanks for all your help.  I think this family came to Cornwall from Wales.  If you find any link to Welsh families I would love to know.

Brilliant as always our Kris !!

Fizzy

PS Glad my meagre contribution was right !!!!
I was going to add a note to the poster that if you stick rigidly to spelling you could end up finding nothing.

I am also looking for more information about my Phillips family from Padstow.  My Mary Elizabeth Phillips born around 1816 (could vary)  Jmarried John Rosevear in Padstow on June 12, 1836.  They later moved to Ontario Canada.  I believe John Rosevear was born abt 1801 in Nanstallon/Bodmin, Cornwall England.  I am trying to find any information about their lives in the area (occupations, deeds, marriages, christening/baptisms).  If anyone has a connection to this family, I would love to hear from you!
